{"id":735075,"date":"2026-02-01T11:17:21","date_gmt":"2026-02-01T11:17:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/735075\/"},"modified":"2026-02-01T11:17:21","modified_gmt":"2026-02-01T11:17:21","slug":"tension-over-countries-drug-stockpiles-looms-over-critical-medicines-act-talks-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/735075\/","title":{"rendered":"Tension over countries\u2019 drug stockpiles looms over Critical Medicines Act talks \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThere are differing positions between different member states on that,\u201d he said. \u201cI think probably smaller member states would be more supportive of such redistribution mechanisms than those bigger ones who are stockpiling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Buying power<\/p>\n<p>Another point of contention will be around procurement.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission proposed expanding rules to allow multiple countries to purchase medicines together, known as joint procurement, increasing their buying power. <\/p>\n<p>But this applies not only to the cheap, generic drugs such as antibiotics and painkillers which account for the majority of defined &#8220;critical medicines,&#8221; but also to certain innovative drugs, such as for <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/195367\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rare diseases <\/a>. This <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/208289\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised serious concerns <\/a>among the pharmaceutical industry and is likely to flare up in legislative talks too.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Commission&#8217;s draft allowed it to participate in the joint purchasing of medicines.
