This isn’t the setting of a science fiction tale, but the everyday experience in Theydon Bois, an Epping Forest village where street lighting is forbidden and nocturnal illumination comes solely from the local Tube station and neighbouring retail premises.<\/p>\n

Situated as the penultimate station on the Central line, Theydon Bois has maintained its distinctive after-dark character through prohibiting street lamps, following sustained local campaigning. For years, residents have repeatedly rejected proposals to install such lighting, concerned it would alter the village’s character and burden them financially.<\/p>\n

In 2010, Essex County Council moved to deactivate 70 per cent of Epping Forest’s street lamps during night hours as part of efforts to deliver \u00a36.5 million in savings by 2020. The radiance from nearby shops and the Underground station now provides lighting for adjacent thoroughfares, rendering this a remarkable destination to visit and a sanctuary for those passionate about astronomy.<\/p>\n

The village hall is available for hire specifically for stargazing, underscoring the location’s suitability for such pursuits.<\/p>\n

However, there’s considerably more to Theydon Bois than its unique street lighting philosophy. The village is particularly renowned for its ‘Avenue of Trees’, a magnificent row of oak trees originally planted during the 1830s.<\/p>\n

Essentially, it’s an excellent location to call home. Unfortunately, this desirability is mirrored in property<\/a> values.<\/p>\n

According to Rightmove<\/a>, the village’s typical house will cost you nearly \u00a31 million. Compare that to London’s \u00a3660K…<\/p>\n

Do remember that London offers a far wider variety of housing stock, meaning the more affordable areas of the capital drag its average downwards. Nevertheless, it’s an indication that residing in Theydon Bois carries a substantial financial commitment.<\/p>\n
