Not only do they directly harm your gut microbiome, they make you gain weight.<\/p>\n<p>Studies comparing sugary drinks with diet versions show no difference when it comes to preventing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/obesity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">obesity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Why? go to a trusted breaker instead!Credit: Getty<\/p>\n<p>MOST supermarket breads are UPFs and a missed opportunity for what can be a nutrient dense food.<\/p>\n<p>I bake bread myself or go to a trusted baker, who will use minimal ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>What food do you need for a healthy diet?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content--intro\">IF you want to have good health, a good way to start is from your diet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/eat-well\/food-guidelines-and-food-labels\/the-eatwell-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">The Eatwell Guide<\/a>\u00a0shows that to have a healthy, balanced diet, people should try to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day<\/li>\n<li>base\u00a0meals on higher fibre starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice or pasta<\/li>\n<li>have some dairy or dairy alternatives (such as soya drinks)<\/li>\n<li>eat some beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other protein<\/li>\n<li>choose unsaturated oils and spreads, and eat them in small amounts<\/li>\n<li>drink plenty of fluids\u00a0(at least 6 to 8 glasses a day)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/eat-well\/how-to-eat-a-balanced-diet\/eating-a-balanced-diet\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NHS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2018FAKE\u2019 FERMENTS<a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Glass of turmeric kombucha with mint.\" height=\"640\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"Getty\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/NINTCHDBPICT000749515884.jpg\" data-caption=\"Not all food and drinks advertised as fermented actually contain bacteria\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/NINTCHDBPICT000749515884.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>12<\/p>\n<p>Not all food and drinks advertised as fermented actually contain bacteriaCredit: Getty<\/p>\n<p>FERMENTED foods and drinks can be incredibly good for our gut health, but legally, products don\u2019t always need to have any real strains of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/bacteria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bacteria<\/a> in them!<\/p>\n<p>Always read the label. opt for eggs and beans instead which are a fraction of the costCredit: Getty<\/p>\n<p>I WENT through a phase of eating protein pancakes, bars and chocolate.<\/p>\n<p>I could have enjoyed much more nutrient-dense sources like eggs and beans for a fraction of the cost &#8211; desserts are often packed with emulsifiers and stabilisersCredit: Getty<\/p>\n<p>IF I&#8217;m going to have a dessert, it\u2019s a traditional, homemade one with all the bells and whistles.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a rare treat I genuinely look forward to rather than a half-arsed \u2018high protein\u2019 or \u2018low sugar\u2019 replacement packed with emulsifiers and stabilisers.<\/p>\n<p>NOT ALL OR NOTHING<\/p>\n<p>YOU don\u2019t need to cut UPFs out completely though.<\/p>\n<p>I believe life is for living and in today\u2019s world, it would be incredibly difficult to avoid all UPFs.<\/p>\n<p>I estimate only 10 per cent of what I eat comes from UPFs \u2013 they are often you-only-live-once indulgences which I don\u2019t overthink!<\/p>\n<p>Even some of the 85 per cent dark chocolate I eat is technically an UPF but I don\u2019t think this negates its beneficial polyphenols, which can prevent cell damage and help you live longer.<\/p>\n<p>I also still eat childhood-favourite biscuits and ice-creams as rare treats.<\/p>\n<p>As a doctor I\u2019m painfully aware that life is too short \u2013 \u2018good enough\u2019 is my goal.<\/p>\n<p>My number one piece of advice can be summarised in four words: cook your own food.<\/p>\n<p>The mantra for many Brits seems to be that food must be, above all else, convenient.<\/p>\n<p>Marketing pushes the idea that we lead busy lives and shouldn\u2019t feel pressured to \u2018slave away in the kitchen\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>But we all make time for the things that are important to us (look at your screen time!).<\/p>\n<p>Changing your attitude is the most powerful tool to reduce your UPF consumption.<\/p>\n<p>SIMPLE SWAPS<\/p>\n<p>GETTING less than 20 per cent of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">energy<\/a> from UPFs will produce astronomical results for your health. <\/p>\n<p>These are some of my favourite simple swaps&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Crackers \u2013 try Ryvita Crispbreads instead<\/li>\n<li>Supermarket bread \u2013 seeded rye often isn\u2019t UPF; otherwise, go to a trusted bakery or bake it yourself<\/li>\n<li>Granola \u2013 not my idea of a glucose-steady breakfast; instead, use toasted nuts, shaved coconut, seeds, cacao nibs<\/li>\n<li>Sweet yoghurt \u2013 buy plain yoghurt and mix with frozen berries<\/li>\n<li>Salad dressing &#8211; make this yourself by blitzing a jar of roasted peppers, a handful of fresh basil, a handful almonds, 1tsp paprika, 2tbsp extra virgin olive oil<\/li>\n<li>Cereal bars \u2013 I\u2019m not a fan and would treat sweet foods like this as a dessert; if you really love them, cook them yourself and eat them at the end of a savoury meal<\/li>\n<li>Protein products \u2013 get protein from whole foods like Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, eggs, pulses and tofu, which are cheaper and better for you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Book cover for &quot;What Your Doctor Eats&quot;
