{"id":738932,"date":"2026-02-03T06:21:18","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T06:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/738932\/"},"modified":"2026-02-03T06:21:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T06:21:18","slug":"controversy-over-plan-for-van-dwellers-on-old-south-bristol-railway-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/738932\/","title":{"rendered":"Controversy over plan for van-dwellers on old South Bristol railway line"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People living near the site are opposing the plan<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"eager\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/0_JMP_SWA_100821Brislington_Tramway_011_JPG.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"The North Somerset Railway Line, now, behind the Lodekka pub in Brislington\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">The North Somerset Railway Line, now, behind the Lodekka pub in Brislington(Image: John Myers)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A third new \u2018meanwhile site\u2019 for Bristol\u2019s van and caravan dwellers has been proposed by <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bristol-city-council\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Bristol City Council<\/a> &#8211; on an old railway line in <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/brislington\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Brislington<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The city council has submitted an application to itself to create 30 pitches for vehicles that people live in on the old <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/north-somerset\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">North Somerset<\/a> Railway line, more commonly known as \u2018the Tramway\u2019 behind the Lodekka pub on the A4 <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bath-and-north-east-somerset\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Bath<\/a> Road in Brislington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The site would stretch from behind the pub, south along the old railway line under the Bath Road bridge to the point where Talbot Road crosses over the line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It is the third new \u2018meanwhile site\u2019 identified by the council after the council <a aria-label=\"opened a new one in LockleazeLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/first-new-meanwhile-site-van-10707601\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">opened a new one in Lockleaze<\/a>, and proposed another in <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/southmead\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Southmead<\/a> before Christmas, as the Green Party-led city council looks to increase the number of places van dwellers are allowed to park up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The council wants to provide 250 pitches across the city by the end of the financial year, with four further sites \u2013 one in <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/southmead\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Southmead<\/a>, this one in <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/brislington\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Brislington<\/a> and two in <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/hengrove\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Hengrove<\/a> \u2013 currently in the early stages of the planning permission process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">If those four sites are granted planning consent, they will bring the total of available pitches to around the 200 mark. The sites are a key part of the council\u2019s new \u201cvehicle dweller policy\u201d as BCC says they are a safer, more manageable alternative to living on the side of the road.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/0_JMP_SWA_100821Brislington_Tramway_005_JPG.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">(Image: John Myers)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The council took most of 2025 to come up with a new policy on van-dwellers after the controversy over the numbers of people living in vehicles on the Downs &#8211; with at one time more than 125 caravans and vans on the roads of Durdham Down.
