We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services. <a data-identity=\"ad-policy-link\" href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/advertising\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brandBlue-500 hover:text-blue-800 transition underline\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\">Policy<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \">But what about \u201cOzempic blindness\u201d?<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \">Vitreoretinal surgeon <a data-identity=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/providers.clevelandclinic.org\/provider\/katherine-talcott\/4270729\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brandBlue-500 print:text-black underline underline-offset-[5px] print:no-underline decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Katherine Talcott, MD<\/a>, explains what we know about how weight loss drugs may impact your vision.<\/p>\n<p>Does Ozempic cause blindness?<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \">\u201cOzempic blindness\u201d isn\u2019t an actual medical diagnosis, notes Dr. Talcott.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \">\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of research on whether medications like Ozempic have any adverse impacts in the eye,\u201d she says. \u201cThere\u2019s a possible association with nonarteritic anterior ischemic neuropathy (NAION), which can cause vision to decrease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \"><a data-identity=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaophthalmology\/fullarticle\/2820255\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brandBlue-500 print:text-black underline underline-offset-[5px] print:no-underline decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">One study<\/a> compared people who were on Ozempic with people who weren\u2019t taking the medication. The results showed an increased risk of having NAION in people who were on Ozempic.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \">\u201cThat caused a fair amount of concern. But it\u2019s important to note the researchers found an association, not necessarily a causation, between the two,\u201d clarifies Dr. Talcott, who was a co-author on a <a data-identity=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ajo.com\/article\/S0002-9394(25)00094-7\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brandBlue-500 print:text-black underline underline-offset-[5px] print:no-underline decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> that found no association between Ozempic and NAION.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \">It\u2019s worth noting that organizations, including the <a data-identity=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brandBlue-500 print:text-black underline underline-offset-[5px] print:no-underline decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">American Academy of Ophthalmology<\/a>, have advised healthcare providers to discuss the potential link with patients on Ozempic or other GLP-1s.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \">\u201cBut it\u2019s not recommended that people stop those medications,\u201d stresses Dr. Talcott. \u201cYou should have a discussion with your primary care doctor about the risks and benefits. Most eye doctors feel that the benefits of these drugs outweigh any potential risk, in terms of the eye.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \">One of those potential benefits? <a data-identity=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39833406\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brandBlue-500 print:text-black underline underline-offset-[5px] print:no-underline decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Some early studies<\/a> show that Ozempic may decrease the risk of developing <a data-identity=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/consultqd.clevelandclinic.org\/glp-1-agonists-may-lower-risk-of-age-related-macular-degeneration\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brandBlue-500 print:text-black underline underline-offset-[5px] print:no-underline decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">age-related macular degeneration (AMD)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ozempic blindness symptoms<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \">If you\u2019re experiencing NAION, you may notice:<\/p>\n<ul data-identity=\"unordered-list\" class=\"my-rem16px mx-0 pl-[1.25rem] list-disc marker:text-brandBlue-500 print:marker:text-black marker:pl-rem24px  \">\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px \">Blurring or worsening vision across part of your field of vision<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px \">Weakened color vision (dyschromatopsia)<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px \">Sudden, painless vision loss<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \">\u201cWhile there isn\u2019t any treatment for NAION, about a third of people diagnosed with it will experience an improvement in their vision over time,\u201d says Dr. Talcott.<\/p>\n<p>Who is most at risk?<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \">Healthcare providers are still learning more about NAION and how it affects someone\u2019s vision. The theory is that there\u2019s a disruption to the circulation in your optic nerve. Certain factors can contribute to NAION like:<\/p>\n<ul data-identity=\"unordered-list\" class=\"my-rem16px mx-0 pl-[1.25rem] list-disc marker:text-brandBlue-500 print:marker:text-black marker:pl-rem24px  \">\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px \">High blood pressure (hypertension)<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px \">Low blood pressure while sleeping<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px \">Type 2 diabetes<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px \">Atherosclerosis<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px \">Sleep apnea<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px \">Anemia<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px \">Smoking<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px \">Migraines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \">\u201cSome <a data-identity=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34894326\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brandBlue-500 print:text-black underline underline-offset-[5px] print:no-underline decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">initial studies<\/a> on Ozempic suggested that if you have diabetes-related retinopathy, the medication can worsen it,\u201d says Dr. Talcott. \u201cBut regardless of what those studies show, most healthcare providers would recommend GLP-1s because they help manage diabetes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When to see a doctor<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \">If you\u2019re on a semaglutide or another weight loss drug and notice a difference in your vision, Dr. Talcott recommends talking to your healthcare provider.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \">\u201cYou should be seen sooner, rather than later \u2014\u00a0within a few days,\u201d she urges. \u201cIf you have sudden, painless vision loss, then you should be seen urgently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Key takeaway<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \">Ozempic eye blindness is rare. \u201cPeople who are on Ozempic shouldn\u2019t notice a change in their vision at all,\u201d concludes Dr. Talcott.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \">And she stresses that more research is needed to fully understand the pros and cons of Ozempic and other weight loss drugs and how they may affect your eye health.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px  \">\u201cSo many people are on the GLP-1s, including Ozempic,\u201d she continues. \u201cWe want to have a better understanding of how these medications impact eye health in terms of either preventing the progression of an eye disease or worsening an existing condition.
