Moscow said it has made a proposal to keep observing the treaty\u2019s limits for another \u200cyear that remains on the table but the US is yet \u200cto respond.<\/p>\n
Ryabkov said Moscow would not send any further communications to Washington.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe completed everything necessary in a timely manner, and they had ample time to consider it. The lack of a response is also a response,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
To revive the strategic security dialogue between the two countries, the US must significantly change course in its foreign policy approach to Moscow, he added.<\/p>\n
\u201cSignificant reforms are required \u2013 improvements in the US\u2019s overall approach to its relations with us,\u201d Ryabkov said.<\/p>\n
However, the official insisted that Russia will not enter a new arms race after the nuclear treaty expires.<\/p>\n
\u2018Dangerous\u2019 moment: Kremlin<\/p>\n
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov separately warned that the world was heading into a \u201cdangerous\u201d moment with the treaty set to expire.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn just a few days, the world will be in a more dangerous position than it has ever been before,\u201d Peskov said, adding that the world\u2019s top two nuclear powers would be \u201cleft without a fundamental document that would limit and control these arsenals\u201d.<\/p>\n
The New START treaty, which was signed by former US President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev in 2010, caps the number of strategic nuclear warheads that the US and Russia can deploy.<\/p>\n
It came into force in February 2011 and was extended in 2021 for five years after former US President Joe Biden took office.<\/p>\n
Under the agreement, Moscow and Washington are committed to deploying no more than 1,550 strategic nuclear warheads and a maximum of 700 long-range missiles and bombers.<\/p>\n
