His words came two days before the expiration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/2\/22\/what-is-the-new-start-nuclear-deal-and-why-did-russia-suspend-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New START treaty<\/a>, the last remaining nuclear arms control pact between Washington and Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf [the Americans] opt to pump some weapons systems to the region or deploy certain elements of their Golden Dome concept [in Greenland], it will be a situation that would require military and technical compensatory measures, and our specialists will be quite ready to take them,\u201d Ryabkov said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere can be no doubt about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The comments followed US President Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/22\/trumps-greenland-framework-deal-what-we-know-about-it-what-we-dont\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remarks last month<\/a> that discussions were being held about the Golden Dome \u2013 Washington\u2019s proposed multilayered missile defence programme intended to be completed by the end of Trump\u2019s term in 2029 \u2013 \u201cas it pertains to Greenland\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Trump made the remarks as he claimed to have struck an agreement on a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/video\/newsfeed\/2026\/1\/22\/trump-praises-infinite-greenland-framework-deal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">framework of a future deal<\/a>\u201d on the Arctic island, a self-governing territory of Denmark, with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to acquire the island for strategic national security reasons despite the fierce objections of Denmark, Greenland and other European allies.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, he threatened to impose escalating tariffs on countries that opposed his plans, plunging transatlantic relations into crisis, before retracting the threat and claiming the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/video\/the-take-2\/2026\/1\/23\/glb_davosframework_av_v1-230126\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cframework\u201d<\/a> for a deal had been reached during talks with the NATO chief.<\/p>\n<p>Nuclear pact due to expire<\/p>\n<p>Ryabkov also addressed the impending expiration of the New START treaty, which is due to lapse on Thursday unless a \u200dlast-minute understanding is struck.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow said it has made a proposal to keep observing the treaty\u2019s limits for another \u200cyear that remains on the table but the US is yet \u200cto respond.<\/p>\n<p>Ryabkov said Moscow would not send any further communications to Washington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe completed everything necessary in a timely manner, and they had ample time to consider it.
