{"id":741609,"date":"2026-02-04T11:11:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T11:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/741609\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T11:11:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T11:11:12","slug":"supermarket-planning-app-marks-key-moment-for-moston-lane-regeneration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/741609\/","title":{"rendered":"Supermarket planning app marks key moment for Moston Lane regeneration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Moston_Superstore_1.png\" alt=\"CGI of the proposed superstore in Moston with modern building and parking outside\" class=\"mainImg\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"well\">A planning application to relocate the Moston Superstore on Pym Street has been submitted helping to unlock an opportunity to create a new public square as part of a major \u00a325m vision for Moston Lane.<\/p>\n<p>Pending planning permission, the Moston Superstore will move to a site on Kenyon Lane\u00a0currently occupied by the Ebsworth\u00a0Street car\u00a0park, providing a new and\u00a0larger\u00a0food shop for the community, along with dedicated\u00a0car\u00a0parking\u00a0and cycle store\u00a0for the first time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Existing parking on Pym Street will remain open to the public, while empty sites on Albine Street and Cole Street \u2013 formerly used by Manchester College \u2013 will also be reopened for public use later this year.\u00a0These sites will add further parking for locals and\u00a0visitors\u00a0when the Ebsworth\u00a0Street car\u00a0park is developed to build the new supermarket.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pa.manchester.gov.uk\/online-applications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Find out more about the proposed development<\/a>: Ref 144823\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Following the acquisition of key sites by the Council between Pym Street and Hartley Street, the former supermarket site will be cleared to\u00a0build a new\u00a0public\u00a0square\u00a0facing onto Moston Lane, providing a new\u00a0hub\u00a0for\u00a0the community.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The space is expected to be flexible to allow markets and community events, with new seating, lighting, trees, and planting \u2013\u2013 helping to attract\u00a0shoppers and\u00a0visitors to support local businesses and strengthen the local economy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>To date, the multi-million-pound\u00a0programme\u00a0across Moston has seen new social housing, new pocket parks and green spaces, junction improvements, road safety works, new\u00a0alley-gates\u00a0and investment to tackle fly-tipping and environmental issues.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>On Moston Lane itself,\u00a0enhancements\u00a0and improvements to three pocket parks were completed\u00a0last year\u00a0alongside investment in the Simpson Memorial Hall and Community Hub.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, over \u00a33m of government grant funding has been invested in new social and affordable homes for Moston for\u00a0local residents\u00a0in recent years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the new public square, the 2023 framework\u00a0indicated\u00a0that the\u00a0vacant\u00a0sites behind Moston Lane\u00a0could also accommodate around 80 new homes \u2013 potentially a mix of apartments and town houses \u2013 including social and genuinely affordable homes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0new development would include\u00a0ground floor spaces\u00a0that\u00a0are envisaged as new retail and commercial opportunities to\u00a0add to\u00a0the offer on Moston Lane, along with potential health and community facilities\u00a0as well as dedicated\u00a0car parking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>And a further 30 to 40 homes are planned for a site between Waterman close and Ebsworth Street to the south of Moston Lane. The homes would be family housing helping to meet demand for larger properties in this area.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Draft designs for the new square\u00a0and the new homes\u00a0will be published once the Council has selected a developer to build the new space,\u00a0homes\u00a0and commercial space. That process is\u00a0expected to conclude in the coming months, at which point\u00a0there will be consultation with the community\u00a0on the proposals\u00a0and a chance for people to have their say.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>To give residents and businesses a voice in the ongoing regeneration of Moston Lane the Council is creating a new advisory group. Chaired by\u202flocal\u202fcouncillor\u202fPaula Appleby,\u202fthe group will help the council decide on local priorities and how to direct future investment in the area. The group will also work with the appointed developer and input into the design of the new square and public realm.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Moston Lane represents one of the\u00a0initial\u00a0locations of focus as part of the Council\u2019s city-wide\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.gov.uk\/news\/article\/9807\/focus_on_high_street_regeneration_continues_as_investment_into_the_beating_hearts_of_manchesters_communities_expands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High Street Investment programme.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n<strong>Cllr Bev Craig OBE, Leader of Manchester City Council said:<\/strong>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have ambitious plans to see over \u00a325m investment into Moston Lane and this is a significant milestone for the Moston community as this planning application marks an important step in creating a brand-new public square at the heart of the neighbourhood.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that Moston people are proud and ambitious for their area and want to see a new public square, thriving local high street and new homes. That\u2019s why we are supporting the relocation of the Superstore \u2013 taking this important independent local shop and helping it grow to serve local people for generations to come, while also building new social rent and genuinely affordable homes, investing in local green spaces, and supporting a high street that the community can be proud of.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are committed to making sure Moston can meet its huge potential with substantial investment\u2013 along with our high streets and district centres across the city.
