{"id":742205,"date":"2026-02-04T17:33:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T17:33:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/742205\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T17:33:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T17:33:13","slug":"germany-france-and-italy-lead-eu-push-to-curb-reliance-on-chinas-minerals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/742205\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany, France, and Italy Lead EU Push to Curb Reliance on China\u2019s Minerals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"speakable\">The European Union\u2019s biggest economies \u2013 Germany, France, and Italy \u2013 will lead the bloc\u2019s efforts to build stockpiles of critical minerals to reduce dependence on China, sources familiar with the plans told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/climate-energy\/italy-france-germany-lead-eu-critical-materials-stockpiling-plan-sources-say-2026-02-04\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters<\/a> on Wednesday. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Germany will be responsible for overseeing the sourcing of the critical minerals, France will take charge of helping secure financing for the EU\u2019s purchases, and Italy will oversee the storage of the key metals and minerals, sources who attended a meeting with EU officials in December told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>These sources were not in the know if Germany has already approached producers or who they might be, or which banks could be involved in financing purchases.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Roughnecks-Riches-Start-Up-American-Fracking\/dp\/B0FCDBHGSW\" class=\"charts_banner_clicked charts_banner_add_view\" data-banner_id=\"38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"not_lightbox\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/book.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In early December, the European Commission adopted the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_25_2891\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RESourceEU Action Plan<\/a> to accelerate and enhance efforts to secure the EU\u2019s supply of critical raw materials, including rare earth elements, cobalt or lithium.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative provides financing and concrete tools to protect industry from geopolitical and price shocks, promote projects on critical raw materials in Europe and beyond, and partner with like-minded countries to diversify supply chains, the Commission said two months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Work began at the end of last year with Member States on a coordinated EU approach to stockpiling critical raw materials. A pilot scheme is expected to become operational early this year.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission also pledged to set up a European Critical Raw Materials Centre, which, among other things, will act as a \u201cportfolio manager for diversified and resilient supply chains, including through joint purchasing and stockpiling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the Commission vowed to introduce, in early 2026, restrictions on the export of scraps and waste of permanent magnets to boost Europe\u2019s recycling capacity.
