{"id":742643,"date":"2026-02-04T22:04:18","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T22:04:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/742643\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T22:04:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T22:04:18","slug":"spain-says-it-absolutely-supports-the-uk-rejoining-the-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/742643\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain says it &#8216;absolutely&#8217; supports the UK rejoining the EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spain\u2019s prime minister has said he would \u201cabsolutely\u201d support the UK rejoining the European Union. <\/p>\n<p>In recent months, Keir Starmer and his government have been more vocal and open about their desire for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelondoneconomic.com\/politics\/keir-starmer-brexit-reset-bill-uk-eu-law-402058\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closer ties with Europe<\/a>, and have been critical of the impact Brexit has had on the UK\u2019s economy. <\/p>\n<p>Now, one of the EU\u2019s biggest players, Spain, has made no bones about its desire to see Great Britain reintegrate with Europe and even rejoin the trading bloc. <\/p>\n<p><strong>READ NEXT: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelondoneconomic.com\/politics\/majority-of-brits-want-brexit-to-be-reversed-new-poll-finds-402055\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Majority of Brits want Brexit to be reversed, new poll finds<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In an interview with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/international-politics\/2026\/01\/pedro-sanchez-europes-left-wing-icon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New Statesman<\/a>, Pedro S\u00e1nchez said the country \u201cmisses\u201d the UK\u2019s presence in the EU. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there is a clear need to have the UK on board again, especially nowadays,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>S\u00e1nchez praised the diplomatic progress that was made last year between Spain and the UK, particularly regarding a deal finally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelondoneconomic.com\/politics\/gibraltar-chief-minister-fact-checks-pro-brexit-media-following-eu-deal-394294\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">being reached on Gibraltar<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>He said this was an \u201cobstacle to break through,\u201d and that there is a \u201cclear need\u201d for him and Starmer to learn from one another. <\/p>\n<p>Also this week, there have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cn56dnrvq03o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high-level talks<\/a> between the European Commissioner for finance Valdis Dombrovskis and ministers including chancellor Rachel Reeves. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking after the talks, Dombrovskis said the EU was \u201cready to engage\u201d with the UK on the potentially closer trade ties. This included the possibility of working together on a customs union, a topic on which Dombrovskis said he was \u201copen-minded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Starmer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelondoneconomic.com\/politics\/starmer-brexit-eu-single-market-closer-alignment-401934\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">issued one of his fiercest critiques of Brexit<\/a> and its proponents whilst also declaring his willingness to align the UK more closely with the EU single market.<\/p>\n<p>Recent polling has also found that, almost a decade on from that fateful referendum,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelondoneconomic.com\/politics\/majority-of-brits-want-brexit-to-be-reversed-new-poll-finds-402055\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most Brits want to see Brexit reversed.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Spain\u2019s prime minister has said he would \u201cabsolutely\u201d support the UK rejoining the European Union.
