If an item is bagged illicitly, Sainsbury\u2019s<\/a> punters are shown the video feed and told: \u201cLooks like that last item didn\u2019t scan.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease check you scanned it correctly before continuing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The measure has been brought in after police logged 516,971 incidents of shoplifting<\/a> last year \u2014 up from 429,873 in 2023.<\/p>\n

Shoppers\u2019 reactions have been mixed<\/a>, with one saying they were sent the warning because the packet of basil they bought was \u201ctoo light\u201d.<\/p>\n

Another joked: \u201cThanks to Sainsbury\u2019s, I can now re-live and learn from my packing mistakes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can almost hear (Sky pundit) Jamie Carragher<\/a> lamenting my positioning.\u201d<\/p>\n

A retail source said: \u201cIt\u2019s a deterrent to shoplifters<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cMost people have made a genuine mistake while scanning, which is detected by the scales.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a more gentle reminder than red flashing lights and a member of staff coming over.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Sainsbury\u2019s spokeswoman said: “We regularly review the security measures in our stores and our decisions to implement them are based on a range of factors, including offering our customers a smooth checkout experience.”<\/p>\n

Tesco shoppers can\u2019t get enough of secret compartment that makes self service easier to use – and it\u2019s even in Asda too<\/p>\n

Despite shoplifting being at a record high<\/a>, just one in five incidents reported resulted in a charge \u2014 and more than half ended with no suspect identified.<\/p>\n

Tom Ironside, of the British Retail Consortium, said the crime is costing firms \u00a32billion a year.<\/p>\n
