{"id":748856,"date":"2026-02-07T17:12:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-07T17:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/748856\/"},"modified":"2026-02-07T17:12:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T17:12:11","slug":"are-paris-agreement-targets-unachievable-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/748856\/","title":{"rendered":"Are Paris Agreement targets unachievable? \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sir, \u2013 The oft-quoted warning that Ireland faces fines of up to \u20ac26 billion for failing to meet Paris Accord climate targets is misleading and causes undue anxiety among many. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is now generally accepted by the Environmental Protection  Agency and Government Ministers that Ireland will fail to meet EU climate commitments based on the 2015 Paris Agreement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is estimated that Ireland will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/01\/07\/ireland-will-miss-emissions-reduction-target-by-half-says-obrien\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/01\/07\/ireland-will-miss-emissions-reduction-target-by-half-says-obrien\/\">achieve about half<\/a> of the 51 per cent reduction target in CO2 equivalent emissions by 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland is not alone in failing to meet climate goals, as  only 12 EU countries  are expected to meet 2030 commitments. Some of the large countries, such as Germany, Italy, France, are well off target.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Only six countries, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Luxembourg, Slovenia and Spain will definitely meet EU targets by 2030.
