The popular Carlingford Lough Greenway in north Louth has been closed temporarily due to coastal erosion following the recent storm.<\/p>\n
Walkers and cyclists who ventured out on the Greenway earlier today were dismayed to see that it has been undermined by the heavy seas of recent days.<\/p>\n
The areas closest to starting point near the Marina are worse affected, with the embankment on the coastal side undermined in a number of places. One section of fencing has collapsed into the sea and it also appears that the path itself has been undermined by the waves.<\/p>\n
Coastal erosion was also observed at a number of places further along the Greenway towards Omeath.<\/p>\n
Louth County Council has posted on social media that \u201cFor public safety, the Greenway will be temporarily closed while inspections are carried out.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 6.2km section of Greenway, which was opened 2014, links Carlingford and Omeath, It forms part of a cross-border Greenway running all the way through Newry to Portadown.<\/p>\n
The Louth coast took a severe battering in recent storms. Parts of the road at Ballagan\/Ballynamoney also on the Cooley peninsula which were badly damaged during Storm Chantra, were further undermined by debris washed inland earlier this week.<\/p>\n
