{"id":752680,"date":"2026-02-09T12:10:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T12:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/752680\/"},"modified":"2026-02-09T12:10:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T12:10:13","slug":"glasgow-uni-eyes-predictive-ai-to-power-cognitive-cities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/752680\/","title":{"rendered":"Glasgow Uni eyes predictive AI to power \u201ccognitive cities\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new research centre is setting out to transform Glasgow into one of the world\u2019s first \u201ccognitive\u201d cities, with plans to harness vast amounts of data to revolutionise urban life.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gla.ac.uk\/research\/az\/isac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Centre for Integrated Sensing and Communication Enabling Cognitive Cities<\/a>, or ISAC\u00b3, will use AI to analyse real-time data on city systems gathered by advanced 6G sensors, as well as through citizens\u2019 mobile devices, aiming to create safer and more sustainable environments for residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the current generation of smart city technologies, which also provide real-time data on civic systems, the goal of cognitive cities is to see these become predictive rather than reactive, with algorithms used to help decision-makers solve common problems like gridlock, poor air quality, or failing infrastructure before they happen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fstechsummit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"FS Technology Summit 2026\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img class=\"lazyload\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770639013_272_DIGIT.FYI-In-Article-Ads-750-x-210-px.jpg\" alt=\"FS Technology Summit 2026\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Those behind the Centre said the combination of citywide data and predictive AI used by cognitive city systems will give urban spaces \u201ca level of sensory ability akin to a living organism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNext-generation technologies like real-time data collection, advanced communications, quantum-secured infrastructure, cyber-physical systems and AI-driven analytics will provide the tools required to turn urban spaces into cognitive cities,\u201d said Professor Qammer H. Abbasi, founding director of ISAC\u00b3.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe aims of ISAC\u00b3 align closely with UK and Scottish Government priorities in future communications, AI, semiconductor.\u00a0 quantum technologies, and net zero goals, and will help position Glasgow at the forefront of next-generation urban technology development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In its first year, the Centre will work with industry and academic partners, as well as local and national governments and civic partners, to develop a roadmap for cognitive cities and research projects that can be translated into real-world applications.<\/p>\n<p>A key focus for this roadmap will be balancing the development of innovative systems with strong protections for the data collected by city sensors and mobile devices, with researchers planning to use Glasgow Uni\u2019s campus as a testbed for its prototypes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recommended reading<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Centre will also host workshops and webinars bringing together leaders in integrated sensing, communication and computing to develop routes to practical, cost-efficient prototype technologies.<\/p>\n<p>The initial tranche of work will be undertaken with industry partners like BT, Virgin Media O2, Ericsson, Interdigital and Neutral Wireless Ltd, with collaboration from academic partners, including the Universities of Manchester, Leicester and Strathclyde, Queen Mary University of London, Kings College London and Imperial College London.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work being led by ISAC\u00b3 in Glasgow has the potential to shape how cities evolve globally,\u201d said Mallik Tatipamula, CTO of Ericsson Silicon Valley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCities worldwide are facing shared pressures, from climate volatility and sustainable mobility to public safety and seamless connectivity.
