{"id":75329,"date":"2025-05-05T02:18:13","date_gmt":"2025-05-05T02:18:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/75329\/"},"modified":"2025-05-05T02:18:13","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T02:18:13","slug":"scientists-claim-to-have-discovered-9th-planet-in-our-solar-system-but-not-everyone-is-convinced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/75329\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists claim to have discovered &#8216;9th planet&#8217; in our Solar System&#8230;but not everyone is convinced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Astronomers claim to have discovered a new ninth planet in our solar system, according to research led by Terry Long Phan from Taiwan&#8217;s National Tsing Hua University, and it&#8217;s not Pluto.<\/p>\n<p>The findings, accepted for publication in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia, identify infrared dots that could indicate a planet beyond Neptune.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I felt very excited,&#8221; Phan told Science this week. &#8220;It&#8217;s motivated us a lot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The discovery comes nearly a decade after questions about a mysterious ninth planet first emerged following Pluto&#8217;s demotion in 2006.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"3f0ed\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"1e060e5f35bb5494a1d44ba5beaea6a9\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%202308%201298'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/planet-nine.jpg\" width=\"2308\" height=\"1298\" alt=\"Planet nine\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The researchers identified 13 pairs of dots that could be explained by a moving planet resembling Planet Nine (Stock Image)<\/p>\n<p>GETTY<\/p>\n<p>Phan&#8217;s team used surveys from two infrared space telescopes launched in 1983 and 2006 to conduct their research.<\/p>\n<p>They theorised that a potential planet&#8217;s long orbit would make it visible moving across the sky.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers identified 13 pairs of dots that could be explained by a moving planet resembling Planet Nine.<\/p>\n<p>One set of dots particularly stood out, having matching colours and brightness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MORE LIKE THIS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, the announcement has been met with scepticism from some experts.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Brown, an astronomer at Caltech who helped develop the original Planet Nine hypothesis in 2016, isn&#8217;t convinced.<\/p>\n<p>He told Science that his calculations suggest a different orbit than what Phan&#8217;s team found.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This difference doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s not there, but it means it&#8217;s not Planet Nine,&#8221; Brown explained.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"0953f\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"6223a54de0d43ab5bbab39b3dc8a9e41\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%202131%201407'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/pluto.jpg\" width=\"2131\" height=\"1407\" alt=\"Pluto\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Pluto was demoted in 2006<\/p>\n<p>GETTY<\/p>\n<p>He noted that if the researchers are correct, their planet would disprove his original hypothesis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s kind of fun that a paper that purports to find a candidate for Planet Nine is really finding something that would basically say that we were wrong the entire time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite the scepticism, the search for a ninth planet continues.<\/p>\n<p>The original Planet Nine hypothesis was based on strange orbits of objects in the Kuiper Belt, a region of icy debris beyond Neptune.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers will soon have better tools to investigate these claims.<\/p>\n<p>The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope and the Vera C.
