Eye of the Tiger boss Camille Estephan says not all Cuban professionals will be as reluctant to engage William Scull was against Canelo Alvarez last night.<\/p>\n
Canelo-Scull was a damp squib for the undisputed 168lbs title in Saudi Arabia, with Scull using the ring and Canelo not cutting it off. Between them, Canelo and Scull combined to throw the second fewest amount of punches in CompuBox\u2019s 40-year history, throwing 152 punches.<\/p>\n
Scull is now 23-1 (9 KOs), while Canelo is 63-2-2 (39 KOs) and moving onto a September super-fight with Terence Crawford. Yet Estephan is keen to see the rising Osleys Iglesias get his chance.<\/p>\n
\u201cFirstly, Cuban boxing, they get a bad rap sometimes because they are boxers more than they are fighters, and yesterday Scull was in more of a running routine. But Iglesias has the boxing skills, but he\u2019s a very offensive and engaging fighter, as you can see through his latest fights, and with the power that he has,\u201d Estephan said. \u201cAnd I believe that he\u2019s ready for anyone right now, forget about needing step-ups, in his case it\u2019s just a matter of who can we convince to get in the ring with him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Iglesias has stopped 12 of his 13 victims and is waiting to see now what the IBF will do about the mandatory position, and what might happen with eliminators.<\/p>\n
But, despite his lack of pro experience, Iglesias \u2013 the 27-year-old \u201cEl Tornado\u201d \u2013 is ready for the world leaders, said his promoter.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe definitely is ready for anyone,\u201d Estephan added. \u201cHe\u2019s the IBO champion, so currently obviously the four federations are with Canelo, The Ring as well, but the only other belt of significance is the IBO and Iglesias is the champion. So we\u2019re trying to put him in a position where people have to face him, because that\u2019s just how avoided he is, and understandably so.\u201d<\/p>\n
Of course, Iglesias is not the only bullet Estephan has to fire at the top dogs at 168lbs. Christian Mbilli, 28-0 (23 KOs), meets Maciej Sulecki on June 27 in Quebec City, for the WBC interim title.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo in the division we feel we have the best two guys,\u201d he added.\u00a0 \u201cAnd we\u2019re ready to go after them all. The cream rises to the top, and they can run but they can\u2019t hide.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another Eye of the Tiger contender, standout amateur Imam Khataev, meets Cuban southpaw David Morrell on July 12 in New York.<\/p>\n
Light-heavyweight Khataev is 10-0 (9 KOs), while Morrell is coming off a defeat to David Benavidez.\u00a0<\/p>\n
