{"id":757043,"date":"2026-02-11T11:12:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T11:12:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/757043\/"},"modified":"2026-02-11T11:12:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T11:12:14","slug":"the-commission-sets-up-the-european-ocean-board-and-calls-for-experts-to-advise-on-ocean-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/757043\/","title":{"rendered":"The Commission sets up the European Ocean Board and calls for experts to advise on ocean policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Commission is<a>\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/transparency\/expert-groups-register\/screen\/expert-groups\/consult?lang=en&amp;groupID=4025&amp;fromCallsApplication=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calling for applications<\/a> \u00a0for the High-Level European Ocean Board, a new expert group established under the European Ocean Pact.<\/p>\n<p>The call for applications is open for a period of 4 weeks, offering professionals and organisations the opportunity to help shape the future of ocean governance.<\/p>\n<p>Selection criteria<\/p>\n<p>The Commission will select up to 25 members, considering the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>demonstrated experience<\/strong> in areas related to the ocean, the maritime economy, and marine or coastal policies (including fisheries), particularly at the European and\/or international level<\/li>\n<li><strong>the\u00a0skills, experience, and seniority<\/strong> of the proposed representatives<\/li>\n<li><strong>a good command of English<\/strong>, sufficient to actively take part in discussions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The role of the high-level expert group will be to<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>advise the Commission on and contribute to the effective implementation of the European Ocean Pact<\/li>\n<li>provide opinions on specific matters related to the Ocean Pact and<\/li>\n<li>foster dialogue among members to encourage coherence and synergy between EU policies and private sector initiatives. \u00a0<br \/>In this context, the Board will play a key role in the upcoming ocean observation initiative, supporting ocean knowledge, research and innovation, ocean literacy, and the maritime economy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The members will be invited for a first meeting in\u00a0March 2026 and appointed for a term of <strong>up to five years.\u00a0<\/strong>Meetings will take place yearly. While participation does not include remuneration, travel and subsistence expenses will be reimbursed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Representativeness<\/p>\n<p>The European Ocean Board welcomes <strong>representatives from civil society or organisations at the EU leve<\/strong>l, possessing comprehensive competence and expertise in ocean-related areas. Selected members will ensure geographical representation across EU countries, enriching the group&#8217;s diversity and insights.<\/p>\n<p>Background<\/p>\n<p>Launched in June 2025,\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/oceans-and-fisheries.ec.europa.eu\/european-ocean-pact_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Ocean Pact<\/a>\u00a0serves as a unifying and coordinated framework for the European Union&#8217;s ocean-related policies and actions. This strategy aims\u00a0to better protect the ocean, promote a thriving blue economy, and support the well-being of people living in coastal areas.<\/p>\n<p>The Ocean Pact encompasses a series of initiatives to be developed and implemented.
