T. Barnum, tracing his journey from restless dreamer to world-famous showman.

Barnum at Palace Theatre

Blending biography with theatrical spectacle, the production explores Barnum’s flair for showmanship while never shying away from the personal cost of his ambition.

It is a show that thrives on energy, movement and charm, delivering a visually rich and engaging evening at Palace Theatre.

Director Jonathon O’Boyle

From the outset, Director Jonathan O’Boyle establishes a fast-paced production that mirrors Barnum’s own restless drive.

The story moves swiftly through the chapters of his life, capturing both the excitement of his rise and the tension between fame and Charity.

While the pace rarely slows, it suits the material; Barnum was never a man to stand still, and neither is this production.

Oti Mabuse’s choreography

There is always something happening on stage, whether it be dance, music, or breath-taking circus acts, making it impossible to look away.

Oti Mabuse’s choreography is outstanding, bringing remarkable fluidity to a show that seamlessly blends dance with acrobatics. The transitions from ensemble numbers to circus spectacle feel effortless.

Multi-talented ensemble

The on-stage musicians deserve special mention. Watching performers play instruments while dancing and executing choreography adds another layer of excitement. The multi-talented ensemble reinforces the sense that this production is as much about skill and spectacle as it is about storytelling.

The performer’s ability to sing, dance, and perform physically demanding circus routines, often simultaneously is hugely impressive.

The jumping seesaw act is a particular standout moment: two performers propel one another into the air while executing spins and tricks, creating a thrilling, edge-of-your-seat sequence that perfectly captures the daring spirit of the circus.

Lee Mead as P. T. Barnum

Lee Mead,Barnum UK Tour – Photo credit Pamela Raith

Lee Mead leads the production as P. T. Barnum, delivering an exceptional performance. His voice is nothing short of incredible: rich, commanding and emotionally resonant, engaging the audience completely.

Mead’s stage presence is undeniably showmanesque, embodying Barnum’s charisma and magnetic charm. Even when the character makes morally ambiguous decisions, Mead ensures that the audience cannot help but remain captivated by him.

It is a layered portrayal that balances ambition with vulnerability.

Emotional backbone of the production

Monique Young brings warmth and sincerity to the role of Charity Barnum. She is sweet and encouraging yet unafraid to challenge her husband’s choices. The chemistry between Young and Mead is strong, and their relationship forms the emotional backbone of the production.

Their duets are tender and heartfelt, grounding the spectacle with genuine feeling and reminding us of the human cost behind Barnum’s grand illusions.

Penny Ashmore shines as Jenny Lind, presenting her as both graceful and gently humorous. Ashmore’s operatic vocals are breathtaking, soaring through the theatre. Her musicality adds a distinct texture to the score, and her harp playing is a beautifully intimate touch that enriches her scenes.

The golden age of jazz

Meanwhile, Dominique Planter’s Joice Heth is remarkable; her vocals evoke the golden age of jazz, rich with depth and character. She commands attention whenever she is on stage, delivering an incredibly exciting performance.

Visually, the production is stunning. Lee Newby’s costumes provide pure escapism, transporting the audience back to the early 1800s with the fabrics and period detail.

Impressive set design

The set design is equally impressive, creating the immersive illusion of being inside a circus tent for most of the show. One of the most surreal and memorable visual moments is the appearance of a life-sized elephant, astonishingly realistic in design and a true theatrical spectacle.

Overall, Barnum is a sweet yet spectacular homage to one of entertainment’s most complex figures. It is an exhilarating blend of music, dance and acrobatics, consistently offering multiple focal points across the stage.

Circus enthusiasts

Circus enthusiasts will particularly appreciate the authenticity and daring nature of the acts. But there is plenty of heart for those drawn to character and story. Under Jonathan O’Boyle’s direction, this is a vibrant, entertaining production that celebrates the magic of live performance while reminding us of the fine line between truth and illusion.

Watch it for yourself

Barnum is running at Palace Theatre until Saturday 14th February 2026.
