On a first attempt at her local gym, Woodland Fitness in Colorado, she initially managed an impressive 21 seconds.

The movement then became a regular part of her sessions with PT Eva Lawrence, whom she strength trained with three times a week. ‘When I got 53 seconds, my hands really hurt, and I said, “This isn’t fun,”‘ Bonnie said to The New York Times. Tenaciously, however, she held on, working up to 2:01 last February.

Not long afterwards, she considered participating at a competitive level. ‘There was a picture of a man hanging from a bar in an article,’ she said to KOAA News. ‘I wondered what the Guinness World Record was for women my age.’

‘The gym owner and I looked it up,’ trainer Eve continued. ‘I knew at that point she could beat the record.’ They then began adding farmer’s carries, machine rows and bench presses to their sessions to improve Bonnie’s upper-body and grip strength, and to help manage pain from her arthritis. Part of the difficulty was that she also always wore her wedding ring while hanging, in memory of her husband of 60 years, Mark, who passed away in December 2023.

Bonnie waited until she turned 81 on 5 Jan to make her world-record attempt. On the day itself, Eve gave her 30-second updates for the first two minutes. In practice sessions, she’d regularly reached 2:45, but held on a few agonising seconds longer until 3:03 when her calf began to cramp.

‘I think this is one and done,’ said Bonnie. ‘My goal isn’t to go for another record.’ However, the emphasis on movement throughout the years remains. ‘The older we get, the more we need to take care of our bodies.’

6 ways to improve your dead hang

Dead hangs are an excellent exercise to improve posture and pull-up ability, says PT, nutrition and mindset coach, Chloe Thomas. ‘They can even help you develop your grip so you can hold heavy enough weights for your lower-body movements.’ Here are her top tips.

1. Hang actively, not passively

‘Don’t just hang. Engage your lats and core. Think about having your shoulders gently down and keeping a long neck.’

2. Split your session into sets

Rather than just hanging, Thomas advises doing one set of 10 to 20 seconds, resting for 20 to 40 seconds, and then repeating for three to five rounds. ‘It’s really important for you to monitor your time and try to improve every single week, even if it’s just one second, because the time under tension is what’s going to make a difference.’ Use chalk if you’ve got quite sweaty hands.

aldomurillo//Getty Images

3. This can be easier on your shoulders since your joints aren’t externally or internally rotated. I usually recommend a neutral grip for beginners.’

4. Train the muscles attached to your scapula

‘Scap pull-ups, lat pulldowns, and straight-arm pulldowns work ‘pulling’ muscles like your traps, lats and rhomboids,’ says Thomas. You could also use farmer’s carries to help improve your grip.

5. Modify the movement

Use a resistance band to provide additional assistance, advises Thomas. ‘Put your feet in the band, loop it onto the bar, and stand on it. That will help you if you’re quite weak.’ Or, support some of your weight by putting your toes on a box.

6. Focus on your breathing

Instead of holding your breath, slow your nasal breaths and do long exhales. ‘It’s going to help you relax into the hang and last longer,’ Thomas explains.

Related Stories

Earlier this month, Bonnie Sumner set a new world record for the oldest woman to hold a dead…

[4322
217417,217418,216001,1380,223288,1331,1630,105,1330,223287,218897,16,15
0":"post-759651","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-fitness","8":"tag-collection-fit-at-70-and-beyond","9":"tag-collection-fit-at-any-age","10":"tag-collection-fitness-app","11":"tag-content-type-news","12":"tag-contentid-253ce2a4-ba07-4d8e-9bd7-a5f04a10a74e","13":"tag-displaytype-standard-article","14":"tag-fitness","15":"tag-health","16":"tag-locale-gb","17":"tag-shorttitle-81-year-old-smashes-dead-hang-world-record","18":"tag-subsection-strength-training","19":"tag-uk","20":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
