{"id":76043,"date":"2025-05-05T08:55:16","date_gmt":"2025-05-05T08:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/76043\/"},"modified":"2025-05-05T08:55:16","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T08:55:16","slug":"popular-glasgow-venue-adorned-with-new-mural-by-new-york-artist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/76043\/","title":{"rendered":"Popular Glasgow venue adorned with new mural by New York artist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new billboard installation by a New York artist has been unveiled at a popular Glasgow venue.<\/p>\n<p>Lloyd Foster&#8217;s artwork is the latest addition to The Billboard Project series at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowtimes.co.uk\/topics\/swg3\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:SWG3;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">SWG3<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The installation showcases a three-photo collage captured in Foster\u2019s New York studio, featuring the artist in a custom-designed garment with wing-like structures.<\/p>\n<p>Read more:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowtimes.co.uk\/news\/25131224.glasgows-centre-contemporary-arts-reveal-may-programme?rel=cl_mra\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Glasgow&#039;s Centre for Contemporary Arts reveal May programme;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Glasgow&#8217;s Centre for Contemporary Arts reveal May programme<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This visual motif\u00a0has been designed as a nod to the angelic and winged figures that often appear in Foster&#8217;s sculptural works.<\/p>\n<p>Foster&#8217;s creations combine personal travel photographs with painterly elements, turning fleeting moments into lasting, memory-charged forms.<\/p>\n<p>The imagery in his work is drawn from a variety of memories, including children from Ghana, travels across Africa, cultural symbols, urban life, and personal narratives rooted in his experience growing up in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Born in 1990 to Ghanaian immigrants and raised in Maryland, Foster\u2019s work is heavily influenced by his exploration of identity and heritage.<\/p>\n<p>A trip to Ghana at the age of 24 sparked a decade-long journey of connection, leading him to document daily life across Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Tanzania.<\/p>\n<p>His art strives to jump between physical and spiritual worlds, utilising recurring motifs such as angels and flames to symbolize energy and memory.<\/p>\n<p>Read more:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowtimes.co.uk\/news\/25129644.glasgow-pubs-host-themed-parties-may-bank-holidays?rel=cl_mra\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Glasgow pubs to host themed parties for May bank holidays;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Glasgow pubs to host themed parties for May bank holidays<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Billboard Project was started in 2015 by Glasgow-based artist Jim Lambie, who installed the first work on the side of a disused warehouse beside the SWG3 campus.<\/p>\n<p>Placed directly in the eyeline of passing trains, it offered an &#8220;open frame&#8221; for poetic expression in a public setting.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the project has evolved into an ongoing series co-curated by Lambie and SWG3.<\/p>\n<p>It aims to showcase large-scale works that are designed to blur the line between language, image, and gesture.<\/p>\n<p>Featured artists have included Sue Tompkins, Scott King and Matthew Higgs, David Keenan, and Yoko Ono.<\/p>\n<p>The unveiling of Foster\u2019s billboard coincides with the seventh edition of the Yardworks Festival.<\/p>\n<p>The festival will take place this weekend on May 3 and 4.<\/p>\n<p>This celebration has grown to become one of Europe\u2019s largest festivals of street art and creativity.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the weekend, the venue will transform into a hub of murals, live painting, and artwork.<\/p>\n<p>There will also be a dedicated programme of free workshops and talks celebrating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowtimes.co.uk\/topics\/glasgow-850\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Glasgow 850;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Glasgow 850<\/a> &#8211; an exploration of the city\u2019s history of graffiti, street art, and hip-hop culture.<\/p>\n<p>This year will also mark the festival&#8217;s new indoor exhibition featuring some of the finest street artists and illustrators working today, including members of the Yardworks Artist Mentoring Programme.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A new billboard installation by a New York artist has been unveiled at a popular Glasgow venue.
