{"id":76105,"date":"2025-05-05T09:26:11","date_gmt":"2025-05-05T09:26:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/76105\/"},"modified":"2025-05-05T09:26:11","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T09:26:11","slug":"is-ve-day-2025-a-bank-holiday-in-the-uk-news-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/76105\/","title":{"rendered":"Is VE Day 2025 a bank holiday in the UK? | News UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t<video id=\"2167916\" class=\"video-js\" poster=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/05\/08\/11\/28154210-0-image-a-5_1588932098847.jpg\" data-opts=\"{\" controls=\"\" arrows=\"\" fly=\"\" over=\"\" london=\"\" to=\"\" mark=\"\" ve=\"\" day=\"\" anniversary=\"\" red=\"\" the=\"\" eye=\"\" and=\"\" westminster=\"\" commemorate=\"\" of=\"\" day.=\"\" preload=\"metadata\" playsinline=\"\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"vjs-no-js\">To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbrowser that<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/videojs.com\/html5-video-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supports HTML5<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tvideo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/video><\/p>\n<p>Thousands of people are set to <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/05\/tfl-tells-passengers-avoid-two-tube-stations-heart-london-ve-day-events-23024064\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">line the streets in London<\/a> today to mark the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/05\/ve-day-80th-commemorations-revealed-a-roundup-will-happen-22670620\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day,<\/a> or <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/ve-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VE Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The celebrations <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/03\/best-ve-day-celebrations-across-the-uk-from-red-arrows-flypast-to-royals-and-street-parties-23019996\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">begin today with a Churchill speech performance<\/a>, a military procession of 1,300 armed forces members and a Red Arrows flypast.<\/p>\n<p>Street parties, barbecues and community gatherings will be held across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The parade will kick off <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/uk-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parliament<\/a> Square, with a recital of Winston Churchill\u2019s famous VE Day speech, at the moment Big Ben strikes noon.<\/p>\n<p>Alan Kennett, a 100-year-old veteran who served in Normandy, will then be handed the Torch for Peace before the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and The King\u2019s Troop, Royal Horse Artillery lead a procession down Whitehall.<\/p>\n<p>The celebrations will cap off a week of commemorative events 80 years after <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/world-war-two\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World War II<\/a> ended on May 8, 1945.<\/p>\n<p>What VE bank holiday events are on?<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"646\" height=\"486\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/SEI_250021948-89a1.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23026636\" alt=\"Map shows VE Day 2025 parade route through central London\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThe procession will go past some of London\u2019s biggest landmarks<\/p>\n<p>VE Day celebrations will begin in Parliament Square, where Harry Potter icon Timothy Spall will read out words from Winston Churchill\u2019s famous victory speech.<\/p>\n<p>The 68-year-old actor, whose roles include Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and Chicken Run, will read extracts from the speech in which Churchill told Britons \u2018This is not victory of a party or of any class. It\u2019s a victory of the great British nation as a whole.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>A poignant moment will follow, when the Commonwealth War Graves Torch for Peace will be passed from a young person to a 100-year-old Second World War veteran.<\/p>\n<p>Union Jacks will be draped over the Cenotaph and a military procession will take place from\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/whitehall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Whitehall\u00a0<\/a>to\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/buckingham-palace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buckingham Palace<\/a>, via the Mall.<\/p>\n<p>This procession will be watched by the King and Queen, along with other members of the royal family and the prime minister.<\/p>\n<p>Modern fighter jets will take part in the fly past that follows alongside historic Second World War-era aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>The event will culminate in the Royal Air Force\u2019s Red Arrows roaring overhead, leaving behind them red, white, and blue smoke.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"509\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/SEI_249443112-9043.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23001991\" alt=\"(Original Caption) Victory Party For Children In South London. A service will take place at Westminster Abbey, which will serve as both \u2018an act of shared remembrance and a celebration of the end of the war\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>A concert will also take place at Horseguards Parade to mark the end of commemorations.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a good chance a street party will be taking place near you. Those with country parks, gardens, community halls and quiet roads are asked to unfold the chairs and tables and host a party. <\/p>\n<p>And expect a lot of bell ringing, too.
