{"id":76215,"date":"2025-05-05T10:28:12","date_gmt":"2025-05-05T10:28:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/76215\/"},"modified":"2025-05-05T10:28:12","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T10:28:12","slug":"rise-in-transphobic-hate-crime-in-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/76215\/","title":{"rendered":"Rise in transphobic hate crime in London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Data from the Home Office for the year to March 2024 shows the Met Police recorded 520 offences reports Sonja Tutty, Data Reporter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"639\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/radarhate.jpg\" alt=\"The word 'HATE' sprayed in white on a dark background\" class=\"wp-image-30331\"  \/>Across England and Wales, transphobic hate crimes fell slightly from 4,889 in the year to March 2023, to 4,780 in the most recent year \u2013 (Credit \u2013 Radar)<\/p>\n<p>The number of hate crimes committed against trans people in London has risen in recent years, figures show \u2013 as charities raise concern about the \u201charmful implications\u201d of the recent Supreme Court ruling.<\/p>\n<p>The court\u2019s unanimous ruling, handed down last month, concluded the terms \u201cwoman\u201d and \u201csex\u201d in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex.<\/p>\n<p>It means a Gender Recognition Certificate does not change a person\u2019s legal sex for the purposes of the Act.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/hate-crime-england-and-wales-year-ending-march-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The most recent data from the Home Office<\/a> for the year to March 2024 shows the Met Police recorded 520 offences motivated by hostility or prejudice against transgender people or people perceived to be transgender.<\/p>\n<p>It was an increase on the 412 transphobic crimes the year before, and from 240 five years prior.<\/p>\n<p>Across England and Wales, transphobic hate crimes fell slightly from 4,889 in the year to March 2023, to 4,780 in the most recent year.<\/p>\n<p>However, it has more than doubled from the 2,329 hate crimes recorded five years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The Home Office said there was an increase in harassment offences motivated by transphobia, while there was a fall in malicious communications offences and public fear, alarm or distress offences.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the figures, a government spokesperson said: \u201cThere remain strong protections in place for LGBT+ communities to live free from discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be zero tolerance for hate crimes of any kind, and we will always support the police in taking the strongest possible action against the perpetrators of these abhorrent offences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the Supreme Court ruling has been described as a \u201cwatershed\u201d moment by campaigners, a statement from the LGBT Foundation said it is \u201cdeeply concerned at the widespread, harmful implications\u201d of the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>It added: \u201cIt is a complex ruling, but it is important to be reminded that the Supreme Court reaffirmed that the Equality Act protects trans people against discrimination, based on Gender Reassignment, and will continue to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International similarly said it was \u201cdisappointing\u201d with \u201cpotentially concerning consequences for trans people\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The human rights charity added it is \u201cimportant to stress that the court has been clear that trans people are protected under the Equality Act against discrimination and harassment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the UK Government said it has always supported the protection of single-sex spaces based on \u201cbiological sex\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They added: \u201cThis ruling brings clarity and confidence, for women and service providers such as hospitals, refuges, and sports clubs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Independent news outlets like ours \u2013 reporting for the community without rich backers \u2013 are under threat of closure, turning British towns into news deserts.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The audiences they serve know less, understand less, and can do less.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If our coverage has helped you understand our community a little bit better, please consider supporting us with a monthly, yearly or one-off donation.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Choose the news.
