{"id":763552,"date":"2026-02-14T07:58:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-14T07:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/763552\/"},"modified":"2026-02-14T07:58:15","modified_gmt":"2026-02-14T07:58:15","slug":"munich-security-conference-live-starmer-to-convene-with-world-leaders-as-rubio-warns-europe-of-new-era","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/763552\/","title":{"rendered":"Munich Security conference live: Starmer to convene with world leaders as Rubio warns Europe of &#8216;new era&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.files.bbci.co.uk\/core\/website\/assets\/static\/news\/incident-types\/light-mode\/analysis.77b314ef10.svg\" alt=\"Analysis\" draggable=\"false\" class=\"ssrcss-to2z4d-ContributorImageComponent e2hr5uu0\"\/>Munich summit comes at time of deep anxiety among world leaderspublished at 06:44 GMT<\/p>\n<p>06:44 GMT<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-3u1n9h-Contributor etflsgg2\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/a311d0db-f9e5-4e8e-a87b-47e4e3870e38.jpg.webp.webp\" width=\"64\" height=\"64\" class=\"ssrcss-egie1y-Image edrdn950\"\/><strong>Frank Gardner<\/strong><br \/>Security correspondent, in Munich<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer&#8217;s decision to travel to Bavaria is one of the signs of the significance of this year&#8217;s Munich Security Conference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The summit is taking place at a time of deep anxiety among many leaders here, worried that the United States is pulling away from Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The pressure is on for them to tackle the twin challenges of boosting Europe&#8217;s own security and ending the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Those challenges were laid out by French President Emmanuel Macron in his address on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Even if a deal were reached on Ukraine, he warned, Europe would still be dealing with &#8220;an aggressive Russia with a defensive industry on a sugar high and a bloated arm&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Despite all the talk of solidarity and support for Ukraine, the undercurrent here is the fear of an erratic and unpredictable Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who will be speaking this morning and is meeting Volodymyr Zelensky later today, is expected to repeat the administration&#8217;s demands that Europe spends more within Nato.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Nato&#8217;s European members have already pledged to increase their military commitment in the High North, particularly after Trump said he wanted to take over Greenland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Yet when I spoke to Defence Secretary John Healey yesterday, he insisted the UK&#8217;s ties with Washington remain as strong as ever, pointing to Britain&#8217;s leadership role in the Coalition of the Willing on Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Meanwhile, on the ground in Munich, the Middle East is never far away. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Large numbers of Iranians are expected to rally this afternoon in support of Iran&#8217;s exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi.
