With so many beautiful birds<\/a> regularly visiting gardens across the UK, it can be hard to tell them apart. <\/p>\n

But one year-round visitor is the delicate finch \u2013 from the bird family \u2018Fringillidae’. With around 11-14 different types typically found in the UK, we\u2019ve consulted the experts to help you differentiate between them.<\/p>\n

Keen birdwatchers<\/a> and nature lovers will be pleased to know that there are some simple ways to identify them amongst the crowd of feathered friends gathering around your bird feeders<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Common finches spotted in UK gardens<\/p>\n

Tracey Spensley, from Songbird Survival<\/a>, tells Country Living that the finches most commonly seen in UK parks and gardens can be found listed below. Along with their colourful plumage and short, triangular beaks, these are some of their key characteristics, along with how and where to spot them…<\/p>\n

Chaffinch

The Chaffinch<\/strong> is one of the UK\u2019s most common finches. According to Tracey, “males are colourful with double white wing bars, a pinkish-peach breast with a blue-grey crown, while females are more subtle but still easy to recognise by their white wing bars.”<\/p>\n

The Goldfinch<\/strong> is easier one to spot in the garden, thanks to its bright colours. “The Goldfinch has a red face, yellow wing flashes, with a black cap and black around the eyes, and loves nyjer seed and sunflower hearts,” says Tracey. It often visits in small, lively groups.<\/p>\n

The Greenfinch<\/strong> is a strong, stocky finch, boasting an apple\u2011green body with a flash of yellow on its wings and tail. “You\u2019ll know the Greenfinch as it is confident and greedy at feeders, especially sunflower seeds. Greenfinches are often seen in parks<\/a>, hedgerows, and suburban gardens,” says Tracey.<\/p>\n

The Bullfinch<\/strong> is shy but a favourite for bird lovers, with its bright colour making it one of the easier finches to identify. Tracey adds: “Males have a vivid rose\u2011pink breast and a black cap. Females are softer brown but still distinctive. They are typically found in woodland<\/a> but can be spotted in gardens and parks.”<\/p>\n

When it comes to finches, there are a few identifying factors and traits to look out for. Below are a things to be aware of when looking out for finches in your garden this month…<\/p>\n

Variety in size and bill shape <\/p>\n

Size and bill shape are the features to look out for. Tracey says: “Finches typically have strong, conical bills for seed\u2011eating, but the species range from those with a small bill, like goldfinch<\/strong> and siskin<\/strong>, to finches with a large bill, like parrot crossbill<\/strong> and hawfinch<\/strong>, which is the largest finch.”<\/p>\n

Resident all year or visitors <\/p>\n

Two species of finch are visitors to the UK, while 12 are resident year-round. The brambling<\/strong> is a winter visitor to the UK from Scandinavia, and the common rose finch<\/strong> is a very rare visitor to the UK, usually in autumn on its migration route<\/a> south.<\/p>\n

Defining colours of finches <\/p>\n

Most finches share a foundation of browns and warm greys. These natural tones help them blend into woodland, hedgerows and scrubs, which are the habitats many of them favour. <\/p>\n

“Bold flashes of colour are a finch hallmark \u2013 many finches have striking patches of brighter colour<\/a>. This mix of earthy and bright is one of the easiest ways to recognise a finch at a glance.” Tracey explains. <\/p>\n

“Yellows and greens are especially common \u2013 several UK finches show yellow or greenish tones, often in the wings or body. These colours stand out beautifully in sunlight and are a good clue you\u2019re looking at a finch rather than a sparrow.”<\/p>\n

Reds and pinks appear in some species, with some finches displaying red, rosy, or pinkish tints, usually on the head or breast. Tracey notes that these colours are often more vivid in males. She explains: “Strong, contrasting wing patterns are also a classic finch feature, as finches frequently have pale wing bars and darker flight feathers.”<\/p>\n
