Aston Villa <\/a>reportedly had a transfer approach for highly rated midfielder Lucas Bergvall turned down by Tottenham in the January transfer window.<\/p>\n

The 20-year-old was a standout performer at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last season under Ange Postecoglou and was awarded the club’s player of the year honour after helping them secure the Europa League<\/a> trophy.<\/p>\n

Under Thomas Frank, who was dismissed earlier this week, Bergvall only started 16 matches and was sometimes deployed in wide positions.<\/p>\n

According to The Athletic<\/a>, Villa and Chelsea are among the long-standing admirers of the Sweden international and made direct approaches to Spurs last month<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The report suggests they enquired about a potential transfer, but Spurs are understood to have firmly rejected any departure.<\/p>\n

Villa reportedly reached out after Spurs pipped them to the signing of Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid.<\/p>\n

Chelsea’s interest came after their brief pursuit of Douglas Luiz, who returned to Villa Park.<\/a><\/p>\n

Bergvall is now expected to attract interest from Spurs in the summer, particularly if they fail to qualify for European football.<\/p>\n

The midfielder joined the club in June 2024 from Djurgarden and penned a new contract just 12 months later. His current deal runs until the summer of 2031.<\/p>\n

Unai Emery has been suffering from several injury problems this season, particularly in midfield.<\/p>\n

Boubacar Kamara, Youri Tielemans and John McGinn are all currently unavailable, with Luiz’s return to the club bolstering Villa’s options.<\/p>\n
