These symptoms might become more apparent as the condition progresses.<\/p>\n<p>Dementia is a syndrome, or a group of associated symptoms, linked to the ongoing decline of the brain.<\/p>\n<p>Some lesser-known signs could appear in the night. On its website, the <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/about-dementia\/stages-and-symptoms\/healthy-sleep-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alzheimer\u2019s Society<\/a> shared two symptoms \u201cas dementia progresses\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>These are walking about at night and having difficulty sleeping at night.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Walking about<\/p>\n<p>The charity said that restlessness is \u201cvery common\u201d in people with dementia. It said: \u201cSometimes the person may seem to be searching for someone or something.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey may start walking repeatedly around at home or leaving the house during the day or night.\u201d It continued: &#8220;The person you are caring for may walk a lot during the night if they have difficulty sleeping.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is common in older people and is particularly common in people with dementia. You can do simple things to try to help them sleep. For example, encourage them to develop a routine when going to bed at night. It may help if they avoid daytime naps, caffeinated drinks, and alcohol.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sleep problems<\/p>\n<p>Sleep issues might occur as a person\u2019s body clock becomes disrupted. The society said: \u201cAs well as disruption to their body clock, a person with dementia may sleep more in the day and have difficulty sleeping at night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It continued: \u201cA person with dementia experiences physical changes in their brain because of their condition. These changes can affect how much, and how well they sleep.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA person with dementia may have problems with sleeping at night, and may sleep more during the day. They may find it difficult to get to sleep or they may wake up in the night. The person you care for may not feel well-rested when they wake up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver time, if these problems happen often, poor sleep may make the symptoms of dementia worse. You may find this difficult to cope with.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To help support someone with dementia who has sleeping issues, the charity recommended you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Treat any underlying causes such as pain or medications<\/li>\n<li>Keep a routine<\/li>\n<li>Take them outside in the daytime to get natural light<\/li>\n<li>Engage them in fun physical activities in the day<\/li>\n<li>Avoid giving them caffeine<\/li>\n<li>Avoid cigarettes and alcohol<\/li>\n<li>Avoid them being too hungry, thirsty, or full<\/li>\n<li>Make the bedroom sleep-friendly<\/li>\n<li>Reduce their screen time<\/li>\n<li>During the late evening, try calming and relaxing activities such as a bath or listening to calm music<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If someone you know is experiencing symptoms of dementia, you should speak to a GP.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Two indicators of dementia could appear at night, according to experts.
