{"id":764540,"date":"2026-02-14T19:01:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-14T19:01:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/764540\/"},"modified":"2026-02-14T19:01:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-14T19:01:14","slug":"medieval-tunnel-system-discovered-in-germany","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/764540\/","title":{"rendered":"Medieval tunnel system discovered in Germany"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A medieval tunnel system, formally known as an \u201cerdstall,\u201d was discovered by the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for Heritage Management and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/archaeology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Archaeology<\/a> (LDA) during excavations near Reinstedt in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery was announced in a January social media post saying that \u201ca very special discovery was documented at the end of 2025 in the area of a Middle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/tags\/neolithic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Neolithic<\/a> burial site.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Erdstalls, a combination of Middle High German\u2019s erde (\u201cearth\u201d) and stelle (\u201cplace\u201d), are tunnel systems believed by researchers to have been constructed in the Middle Ages, though their precise dating is a challenge, as they are commonly found empty.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Even so, a horseshoe, a fox skeleton, and the bones of several other small mammals were unearthed in Reinstedt, according to the LDA.<\/p>\n<p>The Spanish-language publication La Br\u00fajula Verde (LBV) added that archaeologists had also discovered a layer of charcoal in the erdstall\u2019s lower levels, believing that the fire was \u201cshort-lived, perhaps merely a source of light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">A pile of large stones found by archaeologists near one of the tunnel\u2019s entrances may have been stacked there as a way to seal off the entrance, LBV said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">LBV further noted that the Reinstedt erdstall\u2019s height ranged between \u201cone and 1.25 meters, with a width of between 50 and 70 centimeters, and in some stretches, it featured a gabled, vaulted ceiling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">According to the LBV, archaeologists also discovered the remains of a possible Bronze Age burial mound near the erdstall and Neolithic tomb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What were erdstalls used for?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Thousands of similar tunnel systems have been discovered across Europe. Nevertheless, their purpose has been subject to decades of theory and debate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Some researchers believed that these tunnels were used as temporary hideouts or escape routes, like those used by Jewish rebels during the Bar Kochba revolt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">LBV, however, explained that the late archaeologist Lambert Karner disregarded this theory in his 1903 book \u201cK\u00fcnstliche H\u00f6hlen aus alter Zeit,\u201d claiming that, based on the tunnels\u2019 design, such a use was impractical.<\/p>\n<p>According to LBV, Historian Anton Haschner proposed that the tunnels may have been \u201cempty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/archaeology\/archaeology-around-the-world\/article-854126\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">symbolic tombs,<\/a> erected by medieval settlers in their new settlements as dwellings for the souls of their ancestors, awaiting the Final Judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cOther interpretations insist on their possible use for initiation rituals, as places of spiritual retreat, or simply as temporary hideouts for people and valuable goods during periods of instability, although the absence of a second exit complicates this last explanation,\u201d LBV went on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir location, often in the basements of old farmhouses, near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/archaeology\/archaeology-around-the-world\/article-874148\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">churches,<\/a> cemeteries, or in remote forests, adds further layers of mystery to their original purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A medieval tunnel system, formally known as an \u201cerdstall,\u201d was discovered by the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for Heritage&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":764541,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_share_on_mastodon":"0"},"categories":[5310],"tags":[224141,2397,198278,2000,299,1824,224140,44146],"class_list":["post-764540","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-germany","tag-archaeological-site","tag-archaeology","tag-bronze-age","tag-eu","tag-europe","tag-germany","tag-middle-age","tag-neolithic"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/116070533182664230","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/764540","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=764540"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/764540\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/764541"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=764540"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=764540"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=764540"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
