(Adam Berry\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong> The German Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) has officially labeled the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as \u201cdefinitely right-wing extremist,\u201d prompting a wave of calls for action from members of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Roderich Kiesewetter, a CDU MP and deputy chairman of the German parliamentary control panel that supervises the BfV and other agencies,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.t-online.de\/nachrichten\/deutschland\/parteien\/id_100704564\/cdu-politiker-wollen-afd-mitglieder-aus-staatsdienst-entfernen.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>: \u201cThe qualification of the party [as extremist] can and should have consequences for public servants as AfD membership is incompatible with public service,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/news.az\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News.Az<\/a> reports citing <a href=\"https:\/\/brusselssignal.eu\/2025\/05\/germanys-cdu-demands-removal-of-afd-members-from-public-service\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">foreign media.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kiesewetter demanded \u201cindividual audits\u201d for AfD-leaning public servants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfD reformulates important topics in an extremist way in order to destroy trust in our democracy and our institutions\u201d, Kiesewetter said in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ardmediathek.de\/video\/Y3JpZDovL2Rhc2Vyc3RlLmRlL21vcmdlbm1hZ2F6aW4vMmU4MWE0ZWUtY2Q1Yy00YmIyLWFiMzgtNmE4NGFjODNlZmM0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a>\u00a0with state broadcaster ARD on May 5.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is about human dignity, not about German dignity\u201d, Kiesewetter continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf someone is openly right-wing extremist or questions our institutions then they should not have access to confidential documents. And that means that in individual cases we must certainly choose tough measures\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow CDU MP Marco Wanderwitz voiced similar comments and also demanded restricting AfD members\u2019 access to firearms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMembers of a right-wing extremist party should neither be allowed to work in public service nor to have a gun licence\u201d, Wanderwitz\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.t-online.de\/nachrichten\/deutschland\/parteien\/id_100704564\/cdu-politiker-wollen-afd-mitglieder-aus-staatsdienst-entfernen.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expect a wave of resignations from the party [AfD] as public servants will have to ask themselves whether their membership endangers their career,\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Wanderwitz also renewed his previous demands for a complete ban on AfD.<\/p>\n<p>The State governments of Bavaria and Hesse \u2013 both coalition governments with the CDU as the senior partner \u2013 have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tagesschau.de\/inland\/innenpolitik\/afd-reaktionen-einstufung-verfassungsschutz-100.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a>\u00a0plans to audit AfD members within their public administrations.<\/p>\n<p>Hessian interior minister Roman Poseck (CDU) told newspaper\u00a0Bild\u00a0the State was reviewing what consequences the constitution watchdogs qualification would have for AfD members in public service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur employees in police and administration have to guarantee that they will always work in favour of the democratic basic order\u201d, Poseck said. The Bavarian interior minister Joachim Herrmann from the CDU\u2019s Bavarian sister party the Christian Social Union (CSU) voiced similar plans.<\/p>\n<p>Other politicians have demanded a freezing of AfD\u2019s funding. \u201cWe should carefully consider an application to withdraw party funding,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tagesschau.de\/inland\/innenpolitik\/afd-reaktionen-einstufung-verfassungsschutz-100.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>\u00a0Sebastian Lechner, leader of CDU in Lower Saxony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find it intolerable to finance right-wing extremist and anti-constitutional propaganda with taxpayers\u2019 money,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.az\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News.Az<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"German Christian Social Democratic MP Roderich Kiesewetter.
