Doris failed to fire last Saturday when leading Leinster in their surprise Champions Cup semi-final loss to Northampton in Dublin.

However Moore, writing before it emerged on Monday afternoon that the number eight will undergo a procedure this week on a shoulder injury, believed that Lions head coach Farrell will stick with the Irishman to lead the upcoming tour to Australia.

Explaining his preference in The Telegraph, Moore claimed: “The squad will inevitably be dominated by players from Ireland and England and as the head coach/captain dynamic is even more important on a Lions’ tour, I expect Farrell will choose Caelen Doris, as a player he knows very well.”

Moore, meanwhile, dismissed the clamour for England Test rookie Henry Pollock to be selected. “Henry Pollock’s recent form has led to him being a ‘bolter’. For me, the whole issue of ‘bolters’ is mystifying, although I accept it is a ubiquitous obsession.

“This probably reflects something that both I and Ian McGeechan have previously stated, that the Lions are not a finishing school for players with potential. You need Test-match animals when it comes to Test-match squads.

“If you do want a bolter, you should choose a player with unmatched pace or extravagant creativity; someone who might unlock a tight game by offering the unexpected.”

Brian Moore’s updated British and Irish Lions squad

Prop (7): Andrew Porter, Ellis Genge, Tadhg Furlong, Will Stuart, Pierre Schoeman, Zander Fagerson, Finlay Bealham

Hooker (3): Dan Sheehan, Jamie George, Dewi Lake

Second row (5): Maro Itoje, Tadhg Beirne, Ollie Chessum, Joe McCarthy, Scott Cummings

Back row (6): Jack Willis, Tom Curry, Jac Morgan, Caelan Doris (captain), Josh van der Flier, Ben Earl

Scrum-half (3): Jamison Gibson-Park, Tomos Williams, Alex Mitchell

Out-half (3): Finn Russell, Fin Smith, Marcus Smith

Centre (4): Sione Tuipolotu, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose, Robbie Henshaw

Back three (5): James Lowe, Duhan van der Merwe, Blair Kinghorn, Tommy Freeman, Hugo Keenan

Wildcard (1): Immanuel Feyi-Waboso

READ MORE: ‘Sea of red’ fails to materialise as fans snub British and Irish Lions squad announcement event

Ex-England hooker Brian Moore has published the rejigged British and Irish Lions squad he would like to see…

[5008
6162,37732,748,5313,35987,393,4884,225,21856,12,16,15
0":"post-76767","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-england","8":"tag-andy-farrell","9":"tag-brian-moore","10":"tag-britain","11":"tag-british-and-irish-lions","12":"tag-caelan-doris","13":"tag-england","14":"tag-great-britain","15":"tag-home-page","16":"tag-maro-itoje","17":"tag-news","18":"tag-uk","19":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
