The measure is closely watched by Bank of England rate-setters given the cost of groceries can weigh heavily on inflation expectations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The move was driven by sharp increases in the cost of coffee and sugar, which have been the target of \u201csin\u201d taxes.<\/p>\n<p>The price of sugar and confectionery has spiked the most over the past year, leading to food and drink inflation figures at 10.2 per cent.\u00a0It comes after pre-packaged milkshakes and lattes were folded into the government\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/budget-sugar-tax-to-be-extended-to-milkshake-and-lattes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u2018sugar tax\u2019 as it attempts to tackle obesity in the UK.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ellie Henderson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investec.com\/en_gb\/focus\/economists.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Investec economist<\/a>, said food price growth would likely to have fallen to 4.2 per cent but cautioned food inflation was still a \u201ckey concern\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/bosses-hold-up-wage-growth-expectations-amid-inflation-tensions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Bosses hold up wage growth expectations amid inflation tensions<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Inflation dip to still leave Bank divided<\/p>\n<p>Whilst inflation is expected to fall, some hawks on the MPC are anticipated to hold their ground.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/bank-of-englands-mann-says-minimum-wage-rise-linked-to-youth-employment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Bank of England<\/a> chief economist Huw Pill said at an event with Santander on Friday that he believed rates were already \u201ca little bit too low\u201d, in a stark suggestion further decisions would continue to be a close call.<\/p>\n<p>In its decision at the beginning of February, the Bank\u2019s Monetary Policy Committee voted to hold rates at 3.75 per cent in a much-closer call than anticipated at a 5-4 split.<\/p>\n<p>Bank governor Andrew Bailey signalled a dovish outlook despite voting for a hold, as he maintained that further cuts were set to come as price growth was set to fall to near the Bank\u2019s target two per cent rate in April.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe now think that inflation will fall back to two per cent by the spring,\u201d Bailey said, with previous forecasts showing inflation only dropping to its target from 2027. \u201cThat\u2019s good news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The latest inflation figures are pencilled in for Wednesday and will come after new unemployment figures on Tuesday.
