{"id":768541,"date":"2026-02-16T16:19:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T16:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/768541\/"},"modified":"2026-02-16T16:19:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T16:19:11","slug":"london-heathrow-increases-target-for-alternative-aviation-fuels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/768541\/","title":{"rendered":"London Heathrow increases target for alternative aviation fuels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>London Heathrow is \u201cstepping up\u201d its decarbonisation plans with a new goal to increase alternative aviation fuels to 5.6 per cent of its total fuel mix in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>This target is two percentage points higher than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstravelnewseurope.com\/Air-Travel\/UK-SAF-mandate-comes-into-force\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UK government\u2019s \u201csustainable\u201d aviation fuel (SAF) mandate<\/a>, which has increased to 3.6 per cent for 2026 after being introduced in January last year. <\/p>\n<p>The 5.6 per cent target also represents a notable increase on the airport\u2019s previous goal for alternative aviation fuels to make up 3 per cent of all fuel usage in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The UK hub had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstravelnewseurope.com\/Air-Travel\/London-Heathrow-provides-SAF-incentives-to-airlines\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previously announced<\/a> \u00a386 million in incentives for airlines to encourage the uptake of alternative aviation fuels. The airport did not respond to BTN Europe\u2019s questions about whether it would increase funding to meet its new target.<\/p>\n<p>Heathrow said in a statement that achieving its latest goal would cut carbon emissions from flights in 2026 by more than 600,000 tonnes over the lifecycle of the fuel. The airport\u2019s future targets include reaching SAF usage of at least 11 per cent by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Gorman, Heathrow\u2019s director of sustainability, said:\u00a0\u201cSustainable aviation fuel is not a hypothetical concept for the future, it\u2019s already producing real impact in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeathrow is leading the way globally, with 17 per cent of the world\u2019s SAF supply in 2024 used at the airport.
