As digital transactions dominate more aspects of daily life, we risk overlooking the fundamental resilience that physical money offers during periods of disruption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWhen systems fail \u2014 whether due to technical issues, cyberattacks, or power outages \u2014 access to cash ensures that people can still buy essential goods and services. This includes identifying and supporting critical services \u2013 such as supermarkets, petrol stations and pharmacies \u2013 to ensure they can continue accepting cash when digital systems are down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Countries like Sweden and Norway have already recognised this, encouraging citizens to keep emergency cash and reinforcing cash acceptance in key parts of the economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cAs we continue to move towards a more digital economy, policymakers and businesses must not lose sight of the need for balance. Protecting access to cash isn&#8217;t just about supporting vulnerable groups \u2014 it\u2019s about ensuring the whole economy can function when digital systems falter. [This week&#8217;s] outage is a clear reminder: in times of crisis, cash still counts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Prof Jianzhong Wu, the head of the school of engineering at Cardiff University, told the Guardian blackouts \u201ccan happen anywhere\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cDespite today\u2019s high standards of reliability, low-probability but high-impact blackout events can still happen.
