{"id":77035,"date":"2025-05-05T17:43:18","date_gmt":"2025-05-05T17:43:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/77035\/"},"modified":"2025-05-05T17:43:18","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T17:43:18","slug":"cars-drive-wrong-way-down-one-way-street-after-roadworks-blunder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/77035\/","title":{"rendered":"Cars drive wrong way down one-way street after roadworks blunder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Video shows several motorists stuck in a closed road<\/p>\n<p>13:50, 05 May 2025Updated 13:50, 05 May 2025<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A roadworks blunder saw several vehicles driving down a closed road before turning round and going the wrong way down a one-way street to escape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The mix-up, on Castle Street in the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bristol-city-centre\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">centre<\/a> of Bristol, caused a &#8216;bit of brief chaos&#8217; yesterday afternoon (Sunday, May 4) according to a witness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The roadworks sign pointing in the direction of a diversion was pointing the wrong way, towards the closed road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Drivers had mistakenly gone down Castle Street, which was closed, thinking it was a diversion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But the road was closed as a crane was doing a heavy lift to a nearby building site.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_AD_05-05-2025_oldmarketJPG.jpg\" alt=\"Cars had entered a closed road due to a roadworks blunder.\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Cars had entered a closed road due to a roadworks blunder.(Image: Paul Gillis \/ Reach PLC)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">At 3.30pm, a worker fixed the diversion sign and had to help the vehicles drive away from Castle Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This, as it turned out, proved to be no simple feat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The vehicles had backed up and caused them to become stuck, before turning around and heading back towards the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/old-market\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Old Market<\/a> roundabout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Driving down the wrong way of the one-way street, the vehicles then had to wait at the roundabout, at what would have been the entrance for those driving into Broadmead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The worker, who had fixed the sign, had to step on to the roundabout, one of Bristol&#8217;s busiest, and halt traffic in order to allow four vehicles to leave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A witness told BristolLive: &#8220;It caused a bit of brief chaos as all the cars backed up and had to turn around, then exit via the one way street.
