The long-awaited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/buildings\/trio-of-practices-complete-delayed-midland-met-university-hospital\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Midland Metropolitan University Hospital<\/a>\u00a0by HKS, Cagni Williams and Sonnemann Toon is also in contention.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital\u2019s construction was delayed by the collapse of contractor Carillion in January 2018 and it finally opened in late 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Cullinan Studio\u2019s retrofit of Dudley College\u2019s Animal Studies Centre and Pringle Richards Sharratt\u2019s new-build Staffordshire History Centre represent projects connected to educational institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Moxon Architects and Jacobs Engineering\u2019s Kepax walking and cycling bridge across the River Severn in Worcester, which opened in December 2024, is also among those in contention, as is Jazz House by Errand Studio, a \u2018low-energy, single-storey\u2019 home on a former derelict garage site in Hereford, and Corner Farm Taw by Fitzwilliam Architects, a restored Grade II-listed farmstead in the Cotswolds.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-816593\" class=\"wp-image-816593 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Midland-Metropolitan-University-Hospital_Jack-Hobhouse_Press_02-1024x683.webp.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-816593\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Midland Metropolitan University Hospital by HKS, Cagni Williams, Sonnemann Toon.<br \/>Credit: Jack Hobhouse<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/riba-west-midlands-is-first-region-to-reveal-2025-award-winners\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In last year\u2019s West Midlands regional awards,<\/a> BDP\u2019s College of Arts &amp; Society at Coventry University was named Building of the Year, for its \u00a343 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bdp.com\/design-stories\/coventry-university-college-of-arts-and-society\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">refurbishment of two Brutalist buildings.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Howells won for two buildings \u2013 a new caf\u00e9 and kitchen at the National Trust\u2019s Grade-I listed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howells.uk\/projects\/hanbury-hall\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hanbury Hall<\/a>; and the One Centenary Way offices, built over a busy road tunnel in Birmingham, for which Simon Pope was named West Midlands Project Architect of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on this year\u2019s shortlist, RIBA West Midlands jury chair and BDP architect director Svetlana Solomonova said: \u2018The selected projects demonstrate a considered and intelligent approach to working with complex sites, existing buildings and infrastructure, showcasing thoughtful strategies for retention, reuse, resource conservation, and resilience.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>She added that the projects focus on inclusivity, sustainability and long-term value.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Together, these projects elevate architectural quality while responding sensitively to context, purpose and the needs of the communities they serve,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-816607\" class=\"wp-image-816607 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Kepax-Footbridge_Simon-Kennedy_Press_02-1024x767.webp.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"767\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-816607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kepax Footbridge by Moxon Architects.<br \/>Creidt: Simon Kennedy \/ London Architectural Photography<\/p>\n<p>All projects shortlisted for RIBA Awards will be visited by a regional jury, and the winning projects will be announced in the spring.<\/p>\n<p>The winners will then be considered for several RIBA Special Awards, including the RIBA Sustainability Award and RIBA Building of the Year, before being considered for a RIBA National Award, to be announced in summer.<\/p>\n<p>The shortlist for the\u202fRIBA Stirling Prize\u202f\u2013 the UK\u2019s best new building \u2013 will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects and announced in September.<\/p>\n<p>The Stirling Prize winner will be announced in October.<\/p>\n<p>Shortlist for 2026 RIBA West Midlands architecture awards<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"They include Associated Architects\u2019 railway station redevelopment for the University of Birmingham.
