{"id":77084,"date":"2025-05-05T18:09:08","date_gmt":"2025-05-05T18:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/77084\/"},"modified":"2025-05-05T18:09:08","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T18:09:08","slug":"jon-voight-gave-trump-idea-for-tariff-on-movies-made-outside-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/77084\/","title":{"rendered":"Jon Voight Gave Trump Idea for Tariff on Movies Made Outside U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/donald-trump\/\" id=\"auto-tag_donald-trump\" data-tag=\"donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/donald-trump-movies-tariffs-hollywood-1235331166\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slap movies made outside the United States<\/a> with a 100 percent tariff was apparently the brain child of actor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/jon-voight\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jon-voight\" data-tag=\"jon-voight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jon Voight<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAccording to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/05\/04\/trump-alcatraz-movies-tariffs-00326220\">Politico<\/a>, a source close to the White House credited the policy to the actor, who was earlier this year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/trump-hollywood-special-ambassadors-voight-gibson-stallone-1235238089\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">named one of Trump\u2019s \u201cspecial ambassadors\u201d to Hollywood<\/a> (alongside Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone). Ben Allen, a California state senator from the Los Angeles area who\u2019s active in the world of Hollywood tax credits, also said he heard from Voight about the possibility of tariffs several days before Trump\u2019s announcement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIndeed, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/pop-culture\/movies\/jon-voight-donald-trump-hollywood-production-boosting-ideas-rcna202982\">NBC News<\/a> reported late last month that Voight and his manager, Steven Paul, had put together a proposal for Trump to reinvigorate the American film and TV industries. Details at the time, however, were slim, with one potential suggestion being federal tax incentives to keep productions in the U.S. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tA rep for Voight did not immediately return Rolling Stone\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhen Trump announced that Voight, Gibson, and Stallone would serve as his \u201cSpecial Envoys\u201d to Hollywood in January, the president flagged the issue of productions leaving the United States \u2014 which the tariffs are allegedly supposed to address. \u201cThese three very talented people will be my eyes and ears, and I will get done what they suggest,\u201d Trump said at the time. \u201cIt will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThose themes were echoed in Trump\u2019s announcement of the murky film tariff plan on Sunday. The president said he was authorizing the Department of Commerce and the United States Trade Representative to enact the tariff on films produced in \u201cforeign lands,\u201d also known as runaway productions. Trump called these productions a \u201cnational security threat\u201d and claimed they\u2019re causing the film industry to die \u201ca very fast death.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cOther Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States,\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding: \u201cThis is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt is true that film jobs, especially in California, have declined significantly in recent years because of high production costs and fewer incentives. While many productions have moved to other parts of the United States (like Atlanta), they\u2019ve also gone abroad thanks to lucrative incentives offered by countries like the U.K. and Canada. But many films also shoot overseas for creative, not economic, reasons, and ostensibly these films would also be hit with the 100 percent if implemented.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn classic Trump administration fashion, the actual plan for implementation remains up in the air. On Monday, White House spokesperson Kush Desai said that \u201cno final decisions on foreign film tariffs have been made,\u201d per <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/white-house-trump-tarrifs-movies-no-final-decisions-1236386847\/\">Variety<\/a>.
