{"id":771537,"date":"2026-02-18T01:28:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T01:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/771537\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T01:28:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T01:28:10","slug":"its-overwhelming-plastic-from-1960s-canada-washes-up-on-orkneys-sanday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/771537\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;It&#8217;s overwhelming&#8217;: Plastic from 1960s Canada washes up on Orkney&#8217;s Sanday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Marine Conservation Society said historic litter often washes up at this time of year due to the seasonal storms &#8211; and that eroding coastal landfill sites are releasing a lot of &#8220;retro&#8221; rubbish too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Spokesperson Catherine Gemmell said: &#8220;Litter, especially plastic litter, never disappears and can last a very long time in the marine environment and also travel across oceans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Meanwhile John Berry, of the Scottish Islands Federation and Greener Orkney, said he was not surprised by the increase in litter on Sanday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve got the really clean beaches [in Orkney] but we&#8217;ve got some really dirty beaches as well,&#8221; he added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I&#8217;m really not surprised to see that, with a slightly different weather pattern, that we&#8217;re getting a lot of the old legacy material.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He added: &#8220;But we will clean it up in spring. And next year, it will be back.
