{"id":771661,"date":"2026-02-18T02:49:18","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T02:49:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/771661\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T02:49:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T02:49:18","slug":"al-borde-arquitectos-creates-biosecure-ecuador-lab-with-adobe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/771661\/","title":{"rendered":"Al Borde Arquitectos creates &#8220;biosecure&#8221; Ecuador lab with adobe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ecuadorian studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/al-borde-arquitectos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Al Borde Arquitectos<\/a> has completed a compact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/laboratories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">laboratory<\/a> in the Amazon using vaulted adobe construction for local community research to &#8220;break external chemical dependency&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Witoca Lab was completed in February 2025 in Huaticocha, Provincia de Orellana, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/ecuador\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ecuador<\/a>. The 46-square metre (495-square foot) research facility is located in the buffer zone of the Sumaco Biosphere Reserve.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2297733 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/witoca-lab-ecuador-al-borde-arquitectos_dezeen_2364_col_23-852x479.jpg\" alt=\"Witoca Lab\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1330\"  \/>Al Borde Arquitectos has completed a three-pointed adobe lab in Ecuador<\/p>\n<p>The lab produces antagonistic microorganisms that discourage pests from damaging the Amazon&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/coffee\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coffee<\/a> and cocoa production.<\/p>\n<p>Its location within the Ecuadorian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/amazon-rainforest\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon<\/a> allows the Witoca community to assume a strategic role in the region and protect local farming operations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2297717 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/witoca-lab-ecuador-al-borde-arquitectos_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Witoca Lab\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>The lab develops pest repellent for the Amazon&#8217;s coffee and cocoa production<\/p>\n<p>Rather than being open for ventilation like much Amazonian architecture, the laboratory is closed off with vernacular materials to protect the delicate biological research within.<\/p>\n<p>Using local soil and following the natural topography, the lab minimises its environmental impact while meeting the high-tech standards of its program.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2297727 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/witoca-lab-ecuador-al-borde-arquitectos_dezeen_2364_col_17-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Witoca Lab\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>In contrast to traditional local architecture, it is completely sealed to be biosecure<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The design provides a hermetic, biosecure environment by utilizing the high thermal mass of adobe vaults as a passive engine,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albordearq.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Al Borde Arquitectos<\/a>, which is based in Quito, Ecuador, told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This system naturally stabilises interior temperatures for microorganism production, meeting strict technical requirements within the extreme Amazonian climate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2297715 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/witoca-lab-ecuador-al-borde-arquitectos_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Witoca Lab\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Local soil was used in its construction<\/p>\n<p>The building consists of a raw-earth structure with an exterior asphalt membrane to protect against tropical rains finished with washable paint on the interior to meet laboratory hygiene standards.<\/p>\n<p>Three symmetrical, parabolic arches intersect to form a Y-shaped plan. The east-facing vault serves as the main access point, while the other two are separated off for reproduction and incubation, converging in the center for the primary laboratory space.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/01\/20\/quito-museum-childrens-play-area-historic-factory\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/awawa-interactive-museum-of-science-quito-ecuador-architecture-sq3-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Ecuador museum\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Quito museum sets children&#8217;s play area within historic factory\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The layout is driven by sterilisation and biosecurity flows,&#8221; the studio said. &#8220;This modular arrangement ensures the strict isolation of biological processes while maintaining a domestic and rural scale.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Structural engineer Patricio Cevallos and master builder Miguel Ramos trained local farmers on-site to construct the specialised earthen vaults in the humid jungle without technical literature.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2297721 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/witoca-lab-ecuador-al-borde-arquitectos_dezeen_2364_col_11-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Witoca Lab\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Three parabolic arches intersect to form the structure<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We developed soil mechanics protocols for Amazonian clay and validated the Lak&#8217;a UTA structural system \u2013 originally developed by architect Ra\u00fal Sandoval \u2013 which is built without formwork,&#8221; the team explained, noting that it used a scalable construction technique that can be adapted for larger-scale infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>While Al Borde provided technical stewardship, the lab was a community-led initiative for Witoca&#8217;s productive project, and its greatest accomplishment is the confirmation that architecture can be a tool for territorial sovereignty, according to the studio.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2297728 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/witoca-lab-ecuador-al-borde-arquitectos_dezeen_2364_col_18-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Witoca Lab\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Local farmers were trained on-site for the construction<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Success lies in the community&#8217;s autonomy,&#8221;
