{"id":772211,"date":"2026-02-18T08:30:23","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T08:30:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/772211\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T08:30:23","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T08:30:23","slug":"scotland-invests-gbp-450-million-in-electrification-of-rail-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/772211\/","title":{"rendered":"Scotland invests GBP 450 million in electrification of rail network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><strong><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-136506 size-mh-magazine-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/catenara-678x381.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"678\" height=\"381\"\/>Network Rail, the UK\u2019s rail infrastructure manager, has begun major work on the partial electrification of the Borders Railway line, which connects Edinburgh to Tweedbank, marking a new step in the program to decarbonize Scotland\u2019s railways.<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The project comes after the Scottish Government confirmed, in September last year, a GBP 342 million investment to electrify routes in Fife and the Borders and introduce 69 electric and battery-electric trains by 2031.<\/p>\n<p>Electrification is presented as a measure that will reduce carbon emissions,<b> <\/b>improve air quality, lower operating costs, and provide a more comfortable experience for passengers.<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>First works: foundations for overhead line equipment<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p>From February 21, teams of engineers will begin preparatory work ahead of piling operations on two sections of the route:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>between Newcraighall and Shawfair, at the Edinburgh end;<\/li>\n<li>between Bowshank Tunnel and Tweedbank station.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The work involves installing the foundations for the poles and brackets that will support the 25 kV 50 Hz overhead line equipment needed to power electric trains.<\/p>\n<p>The work can only be carried out when there is no rail traffic, which is why three weekend closures have been scheduled in March:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>March 14\u201316;<\/li>\n<li>March 21\u201323;<\/li>\n<li>March 28\u201330.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During these periods, trains will be replaced by buses.<\/p>\n<p>According to Lynsey Maclean, Scheme Project Manager at Network Rail Scotland, the line was \u201crebuilt with future electrification in mind\u201d when it reopened in 2015, allowing for less invasive work than on historic routes where track lowering or bridge lifting is required.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Ilderton, Director of Service Delivery at ScotRail, described the electrification as \u201can important step in preparing for the introduction of new, greener trains,\u201d which will offer passengers \u201cquieter, smoother, and more sustainable journeys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since its reopening, the Borders Railway has recorded over 13 million journeys and supported property development and commercial investment along the rail corridor.<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Up to \u00a3450 million framework for electrification in Scotland<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p>In parallel with the work in the Borders, Network Rail has launched a preliminary market consultation for a new contract framework dedicated to the electrification of the Scottish network.<\/p>\n<p>Scotland\u2019s Railway Electrification Framework would cover the period 2027\u20132032 (with a possible extension to 2035) and target works estimated at around GBP 300 million, with the possibility of reaching GBP 450 million if additional projects are included.<\/p>\n<p>The contract would be awarded to a single contractor for the standardized implementation of electrification systems based on the UK\u2019s Master Series projects.<\/p>\n<p>The tender notice is expected to be published in early March.<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Change of strategy: selective electrification by 2045<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The current projects are part of a broader review of Scotland\u2019s rail decarbonization policy.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railwaypro.com\/wp\/scotland-sees-rolling-stock-transition-effective-for-rail-decarbonisation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><b>the Scottish government adopted a revised<\/b><\/a> plan that shifts the focus from extensive electrification of infrastructure to reducing emissions from rolling stock.<\/p>\n<p>The previous plan called for the electrification of approximately 130 km of line per year and the complete elimination of diesel traction in passenger services by 2035. The new strategy extends the deadline to 2045 and adopts an approach considered \u201cproportionate and efficient in terms of the use of public funds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Electrification will remain a priority for heavily used intercity and suburban routes, while alternatives such as battery or hydrogen trains will be explored for rural lines.<\/p>\n<p>Share on: <br \/><a
