Donald Trump sent U.K. officials into a tailspin last month when he fired off a social media post calling the Chagos Islands deal an \u201cact of great stupidity\u201d \u2014 despite previously backing the move. <\/p>\n

The U.S. president\u2019s about-turn in support came as the U.K. backed Greenland amid Trump\u2019s threats to seize the Danish territory at the beginning of the year. <\/p>\n

Following intense transatlantic diplomacy, Trump earlier this month accepted<\/a> the deal struck as the \u201cbest\u201d Prime Minister Keir Starmer can get.<\/p>\n

Senior opposition figures in the Conservative and Reform UK parties have been lobbying against the deal, which will cost Britain around \u00a33.4 billion over the initial 99-year lease.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Conservative Shadow Foreign Secretary Priti Patel called for Starmer to \u201curgently clarify\u201d whether the U.K. will be represented at next week\u2019s talks, warning it is vital for the U.K.\u2019s defense and security interests that an agreement is not concluded without British input.<\/p>\n

The deal \u201cthreatens to compromise operations at the UK-US joint military base at Diego Garcia, exposing it to state threats as well as future lawfare,\u201d Patel said. <\/p>\n
