{"id":77556,"date":"2025-05-05T22:22:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-05T22:22:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/77556\/"},"modified":"2025-05-05T22:22:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T22:22:10","slug":"apologetic-lucy-powell-deeply-regrets-upset-over-dog-whistle-putdown-during-grooming-gangs-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/77556\/","title":{"rendered":"Apologetic Lucy Powell &#8216;deeply regrets&#8217; upset over &#8216;dog whistle&#8217; putdown during grooming gangs debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Manchester Central MP appeared to describe the grooming gangs issue as a \u2018dog whistle\u2019 during a Radio 4 debate.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1_powellJPG.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Lucy Powell &#8216;deeply regrets&#8217; that she appeared to suggest grooming gangs were a &#8216;dog whistle&#8217; issue, according to her office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/manchester-central\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Manchester Central<\/a> MP and the Leader of the House of Commons was on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/bbc\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC<\/a> Radio 4\u2019s Any Questions programme on Friday night with <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/conservative-party\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Conservative Party<\/a> co-chairman Nigel Huddleston, Liberal Democrat MP Helen Morgan and political commentator and Reform UK member Tim Montgomerie when she was asked about grooming gangs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">When Mr Montgomerie brought up a recent Channel 4 documentary about five women\u2019s stories of being groomed and abused by gangs, Ms Powell replied: \u201cOh, we want to blow that little trumpet now, do we? Let\u2019s get that dog whistle out, shall we?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Her comment received widespread backlash and Ms Powell was accused of belittling the crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Ms Powell posted an apology on social media on Saturday night, writing: \u201cIn the heat of a discussion on (Any Questions) I would like to clarify that I regard issues of child exploitation &amp; grooming with the utmost seriousness. I\u2019m sorry if this was unclear. I was challenging the political point scoring around it, not the issue itself. As a constituency MP I\u2019ve dealt with horrendous cases. This (Government) is acting to get to the truth, and deliver justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Today (Monday) Ms Powell declined to comment when the Manchester Evening News called her but her office emphasised that she had &#8216;quickly apologised and sought to clarify that her comments were not in any way directed at the victims or the heinous crimes they\u2019ve been subject to&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The MP &#8216;deeply regrets that her comments have given the impression of anything other than she thinks these are incredibly serious and important matters&#8217;. Her office stressed that Ms Powell has reached out privately to victims in Manchester and would continue to support them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Speaking on the BBC\u2019s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg programme, the Health Secretary Wes Streeting said: \u201cShe\u2019s mortified and, you know, she does not want and would not want people who\u2019ve campaigned on, or been victims of, these most appalling crimes to think she was in any way trying to undermine those experiences or those arguments.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2_JS338572230.jpg\" alt=\"Labour MP Lucy Powell leaves 10 Downing Street\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Labour MP Lucy Powell leaves 10 Downing Street(Image: Tejas Sandhu\/PA Wire)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI think the point she was trying to make, and the point I would make, is on such a serious issue the more we can take the heat of the politics out of this, and get to the heart of the challenge, the better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Mr Montgomerie said Ms Powell\u2019s comments were &#8216;clearly ill-judged&#8217; but her words have &#8216;wider resonance&#8217;. \u201cThere\u2019s been a tendency \u2013 it\u2019s gone on for too long now \u2013 to close all sorts of important debates down by throwing that racist charge at people,\u201d Mr Montgomerie told Sky News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He said people feel there is a &#8216;stifling of debate&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIn the context of grooming gangs, an issue of such consequence, I think it was clearly ill-judged by Lucy Powell, but she was, I think she was keen to have a very strong go at Reform, and I was the representative of Reform that night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cBut unfortunately, the words she chose have wider resonance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cAnd I think the only trouble, if she really is to get in trouble (is) if survivors come out in large numbers and object to what she said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Conservative co-chairman Mr Huddleston told Sky News Ms Powell\u2019s statement was \u201ccompletely inappropriate\u201d. He said: \u201cQuite frankly, Lucy Powell made quite a lot of silly comments on a whole range of issues.
