A Friday night racing at Southwell is usually a family-based traditional affair. Flat racing all over the country has seen dwindling crowds since 2015, but the 7:30am race this Friday in the Midlands will possibly be one of the most-watched races in the country this year.<\/p>\n
Constitution Hill, trained by Nicky Henderson, has eight grade 1 wins under his name, including the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham back in 2023, as well as the Aintree hurdle and three consecutive wins at Kempton in the Christmas Hurdle. His recent form however, has failed to flatter with three falls in his last four races and only one finish which came with James Bowen on board.<\/p>\n
Back in January, Henderson announced that the British thoroughbred would run in a 1m4f flat race at Southwell. The reason why has been debated by pundits, with some suggesting that Henderson is looking for success and a full time turn to racing on the flat. Some, however, are suggesting that confidence could be built running on the flat before the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival next month. Either way, could the five minutes of racing save a sport?\u00a0<\/p>\n
State of flat racing tracks<\/b><\/p>\n
Since 2015, attendance at flat racing has declined by over one million attendees per year, according to the Racing Post\u2019s latest data. It isn\u2019t a new issue that flat racing attendance has been declining. Throughout the second half of the 20th century, attendances at the Epsom Derby declined to such an extent that the organisers changed the race from a Wednesday to a Saturday in hopes of revitalising attendances in 1995.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Epsom Derby still attracts over 100,000 attendees per year, but other racecourses all over the country are seriously struggling. The historic Kempton Park, opened in 1878 and home to the King George VI chase, is currently surviving by a thread. Property development company Redrow owns a legal agreement giving it the possibility to purchase the land and redevelop the site into 3,000 homes. The agreement lasts until 2028 with an option to extend but recent possible legislation set to be put in place by the labour government means that local authorities may no longer have the ability to reject proposals.\u00a0<\/p>\n
One-hundred and forty miles up the M1, and Nottingham racecourse faces similar issues. The local council is considering the sale of the Jockey Club-run racecourse. There is still hope that racing could continue at Nottingham, but could they look north east of the city for inspiration to help bolster attendances?\u00a0<\/p>\n
What is Friday Night Live?<\/b><\/p>\n
Invades events have revolutionised student events nationwide and overseas. Sport Supercharged is the company\u2019s phrase, and that is exactly what they do. The events and media companies have changed horse racing for university students into a party. Live Dj\u2019s, thousands of students, and cameras everywhere have helped the company grow through social media clips and huge numbers of student ambassadors prompting the brand.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Invades founder and the mind between Friday Night Live, Dominic Matcham aims for the event to be \u201cBringing a new audience into racing and showcasing racing in potentially a different light\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n
With the rights being sold to ITV Racing, Friday night flat racing will be broadcast across the country on cable TV, whilst at the track, thousands of students will be in attendance, creating a party like atmosphere. Two editions have been hosted so far at Wolverhampton and Newcastle racecourse, with Southwell set to be the next instalment.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Despite dismal weather two weeks ago in the North East, the crowd was buzzing, with many across all parts of the horse racing industry questioning why this idea hadn\u2019t been introduced sooner.\u00a0<\/p>\n
What\u2019s Next for Constitution Hill?<\/b><\/p>\n
With the mix of the student crowds and the possibility of constitution hill running on Friday, sponsors were drawn to the event. This meant an increased prize pot for the 1m4f race, and with that meant more entries. An oversubscribed race meant that for weeks, many were left wondering if Constitution Hill and his booked jockey Oisin Murphy would even be at their own party.\u00a0<\/p>\n
After four horses above the 8-year-old did not declare for Friday\u2019s race, Nicky Henderson could breathe a sigh of relief with Constitution Hill being confirmed a place. Depending on the result on Friday, the future of his career may be more clear, but without doubt, the decision as to if Constitution Hill runs at Cheltenham is the biggest of Nicky Henderson\u2019s 45-year training career.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The debate around the ethics of horse racing has long debated, with three heavy falls, a fourth may be devastating, but alternatively, Henderson still says that he is the best jumper in England. All eyes will be on Southwell on Friday, and as Cheltenham fast approaches, only Nicky Henderson and Michael Buckley can decide if he is in the race come the opening day of the festival.\u00a0<\/p>\n
