{"id":779511,"date":"2026-02-21T14:10:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-21T14:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/779511\/"},"modified":"2026-02-21T14:10:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-21T14:10:14","slug":"weekly-food-waste-collections-on-the-way-in-wirral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/779511\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekly food waste collections on the way in Wirral"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  From July 6, food waste will be collected every week in Wirral on the same day as scheduled grey and green bin collections, which will remain fortnightly on alternating weeks.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The change is part of the Simpler Recycling programme, introduced under the Environment Act 2021.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It requires all councils to introduce weekly, separate food waste collections.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Councillor Liz Grey, chair of Wirral Council&#8217;s environment, climate emergency and transport committee, said: &#8220;We welcome the changes to household waste collections that are about to be introduced as it will mean that residents have the opportunity to recycle more items at home and reduce the amount of materials that goes to landfill or for incineration.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;However, we do recognise the significance of the change \u2013 particularly the food waste recycling \u2013 for local residents and we are determined to provide them with as much information, guidance and support they might need to make the transition.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Food waste collection has already been trialled in parts of Wirral.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It has been successfully implemented by some other councils.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  From April 6, residents will be able to recycle a wider range of items in their grey bins.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  New items will include biscuit and sweet tins, aerosol sprays (such as deodorant and hairspray), foil, plastic food pots, tubs, trays, and cartons.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Items that will still not be accepted include crisp packets, plastic bags, and drinking glasses.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A trial for collecting plastic bags and wrapping took place with some Wirral households last year.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The council says it is still working with partners to explore future solutions for collecting these materials.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In preparation for the changes, Wirral Council and its waste management partner Biffa will be delivering information and equipment to households in the coming months.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The changes aim to increase recycling rates and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill or incineration.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  They also aim to support more consistent recycling practices nationwide.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The council has pledged to support residents throughout the transition with guidance and resources to make the process as smooth as possible.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"From July 6, food waste will be collected every week in Wirral on the same day as scheduled&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":779512,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3843],"tags":[728,70,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-779511","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-environment","9":"tag-science","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/116109025287675040","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/779511","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=779511"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/779511\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/779512"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=779511"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=779511"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=779511"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
