{"id":784473,"date":"2026-02-23T21:21:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T21:21:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/784473\/"},"modified":"2026-02-23T21:21:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T21:21:13","slug":"spain-is-handing-crown-jewels-to-huawei-lawmakers-warn-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/784473\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain is handing \u2018crown jewels\u2019 to Huawei, lawmakers warn \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Spanish government has defended the contract it struck for storing wiretaps. <\/p>\n<p>Spain\u2019s Interior Ministry said in a statement that the government had awarded a contract to \u201cEuropean companies,\u201d which then bought storage products. \u201cThere is no risk to security, technological and legal sovereignty, nor is there any foreign interference or threat to the custody of evidence,\u201d the ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska told the Spanish parliament last September that Telef\u00f3nica, the country&#8217;s telecom champion, operated a state surveillance system called SITEL and that storage \u201ccabinets\u201d had been integrated into that system.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-07-21\/huawei-says-hardware-poses-no-risk-to-spain-s-wiretapping-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported<\/a><strong> <\/strong>last July that Huawei equipment is not used for classified information, with one government official saying the storage \u201crepresents a minor part of a watertight, audited, isolated and certified system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Juan Fernando L\u00f3pez Aguilar, a prominent member of the European Parliament for the Socialists and Democrats group and a member of Prime Minister Pedro Sanch\u00e9z&#8217;s party in Spain, defended Madrid&#8217;s contract and pushed back on EU moves to intervene on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of &#8220;security, espionage, or violation of technological sovereignty,&#8221; there is &#8220;no risk,&#8221; Aguilar said. <\/p>\n<p>Huawei did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Spanish government has defended the contract it struck for storing wiretaps.
