{"id":78460,"date":"2025-05-06T06:39:11","date_gmt":"2025-05-06T06:39:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/78460\/"},"modified":"2025-05-06T06:39:11","modified_gmt":"2025-05-06T06:39:11","slug":"explained-wonder-drug-ozempic-could-reverse-liver-disease-finds-study-explained-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/78460\/","title":{"rendered":"Explained: \u2018Wonder drug\u2019 Ozempic could reverse liver disease, finds study | Explained News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A drug originally developed to treat diabetes, and now prescribed for weight loss, may have yet another significant application: stopping, perhaps even reversing, liver disease.<\/p>\n<p>In a phase 3 clinical trial involving 800 participants across 37 countries, and lasting 72 weeks, an international team of researchers found that a weekly dose of semaglutide was effective at treating Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH), a serious form of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/health-wellness\/fatty-liver-disease-novel-weight-loss-drugs-shows-new-study-therapy-9977996\/\" class=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fatty liver disease<\/a><\/strong>, in almost two-thirds of patients. Semaglutide is the key component of diabetes drug Ozempic and weight loss drug Wegovy.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"lazyloading\" decoding=\"async\" data-lazy-type=\"lazyloading-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/track_1x1.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/track_1x1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1px\" height=\"1px\" style=\"display:none;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The study was led by Dr Arun Sanyal of the Virginia Commonwealth University (US), and Dr Philip Newsome of King\u2019s College London. Its findings were published on April 30 in The New England Journal of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe results provide strong evidence that semaglutide can help by not only improving liver health, but also addressing the underlying metabolic issues that contribute to the disease,\u201d Sanyal said in a press release by his university.<\/p>\n<p>According to Yale Medicine, MASH describes a spectrum of conditions marked by fat buildup in the liver not caused by alcohol use.
