Charles Darwin University vice-chancellor resigns<\/a><\/p>\nCharles Darwin University’s vice-chancellor Scott Bowman has resigned following an accreditation scandal that has impacted almost 300 of the university’s TAFE students.<\/p>\n
“I’m not on the board, so I don’t know why they made the decision to go to London,” she told ABC Radio Darwin.<\/p>\n
“I’ve very publicly have said right from that announcement that it doesn’t sound right to me.<\/p>\n
“But if it does provide a revenue measure then I’m as surprised as anyone.<\/p>\n
“I think what is very important for core business at CDU is that we need to be providing pathways for territory kids into the jobs of the future, in the territory.”<\/p>\n
National Tertiary Education Union national president Alison Barnes also questioned the university’s spending priorities.<\/p>\n

“Supporting Charles Darwin University students and staff affected by this situation must be the incoming leadership’s top priority,” she said.<\/p>\n
“We’re seeing a pattern at Australian universities where too often spending priorities are out of whack with community expectations.<\/p>\n
“Universities need national, state and territory reform to ensure there is more accountability and transparency across all aspects of spending.”<\/p>\n
No figures released on London campus cost<\/p>\n
CDU has not yet released its 2025 annual report or financial statements showing the amount of money that has been dedicated to the London campus, and did not release the figures in time for the ABC’s deadline.<\/p>\n
Acting Vice-Chancellor Fiona Coulson told the ABC, “We need to be financially sustainable, so we need several revenue streams to be able to support what we need to do in the Northern Territory”.<\/p>\n
“It’s actually our commitment to the Northern Territory that has led us to have those investments into international education,” she said.<\/p>\n
“So for me, I think it’s actually of benefit to the territory, what we are doing with London and with international students.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In announcing the CDU London campus in February last year, Professor Bowman said the project was a “courageous and bold” idea to “keep the university on a sustainable path”.<\/p>\n
“The bottom line is that to deliver world-class degree courses and training to people in the Northern Territory, we have to grow the revenue base by exporting our unique higher education experience,” he said at the time.<\/p>\n
