Good Morning Britain<\/a> presenter Susanna Reid<\/a> made her feelings clear about Labour’s refusal to reverse their cancellation of the winter fuel payment<\/a> during a discussion on the ITV show. Susanna and co-host Ed Balls<\/a> were talking to show contributors Kevin Maguire and Andrew Pierce about the fact the goverment have confirmed the payment won’t be reinstated despite reports. In one of their first moves after coming to power Labour she stripped 10 million pensioners of up to \u00a3300 in support for gas and electricity bills.<\/p>\n

“The political impact has already happened. Now, of course, if they did reinstate it for swathes of pensioners, that would be hugely beneficial to those pensioners, and that would be a good thing for those pensioners, but the political impact has already happened,” she siad. “They took away the winter fuel payment<\/a> and then if they reverse course, not only did they do something wrong in the first place, which they would acknowledge if they reversed course, but they also look weak,” she said.<\/p>\n

She also revealed she had directly tackled the prime minister about the controversial decision.<\/p>\n

“When I spoke to Sir Keir Starmer<\/a> about I asked him four times, did you apologise for doing this?<\/p>\n

Never apologised. There was no apology, no indication of rethinking it. It’s extraordinary!” she said.<\/p>\n

Co-presenter Balls, himself a former MP, said he believes the longer Labour wait the harder it will be to undo the damage caused by the cuts.<\/p>\n

“The thing about politics is that’s about if you make a mistake, it’s always better to say, we got it wrong,” he said.<\/p>\n

“And people say, oh, you can’t do a U- turn, it’s damaging to do U turns. U turns can actually be very, very powerful if you do the work. And the longer you wait, the harder it is,” he said.<\/p>\n

Their discussion came just one day after Reform Chair Zia Yusuf said his party would restore the payment should they be elected into government.<\/p>\n
