In rebuilding that relationship, we need to take into account that they&#8217;re not members of the EU anymore,\u201d French Economy and Finance Minister Roland Lescure told reporters earlier this month, commenting more broadly about EU-U.K. ties in the defense and energy sectors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy drawing the line on the single market, the U.K.\u00a0 has pulled itself out not only from the single market as we know it, but also from its future developments such as Made in Europe rules,\u201d said Sandro Gozi, who co-chairs the European Parliament&#8217;s United Kingdom Contact Group.<\/p>\n<p>However, Gozi, a Macron ally, said he hoped that one day the U.K. will reconsider its decision to leave the single market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/GettyImages-2206168869-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7526988\"  \/>Sandro Gozi said he hoped that one day the U.K. will reconsider its decision to leave the single market. | Ludovic Marin\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The old dividing lines<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is both the EU trade and Brexit debates along the old lines \u2014 France at the hardline end, others keener to emphasize openness,\u201d said David Henig, U.K. director of the European Centre for International Political Economy.<\/p>\n<p>Made in Europe provisions, which are part of the upcoming EU Industrial Accelerator Act, are proving controversial even among countries as they mark a paradigm shift from the bloc\u2019s traditional free-trade agenda.<\/p>\n<p>The text, shepherded by Industry Commissioner St\u00e9phane S\u00e9journ\u00e9, a close Macron ally, <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/213564\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">was delayed for the third time<\/a> on Monday amid disagreement on the scope of its Made in Europe measures and a significant internal pushback within the Commission.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\u201cAnything that brings the U.K. closer to Europe is welcome.
