A vigil for Sarah Everard is set to take place at Clapham Common bandstand on Tuesday to commemorate the fifth anniversary of her death.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The publicly open event \u2013 organised by popular Clapham information and news Instagram page @bestofclaphamldn \u2013 will begin at 6.30pm on 3 March, observing a minute of silence and allowing for candles, laying of flowers and mourning.<\/p>\n

Petr Kaiser, administrator of the Instagram page, said: \u201cThis isn\u2019t a protest event, it is to commemorate Sarah and any other victims.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs well as Sarah, it is an event for all of the women who have lost their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everard<\/a> was raped and murdered by off-duty Metropolitan Police officer Constable Wayne Couzens on 3 March 2021 on her way home from a friend\u2019s house \u2013 a tragedy which shook the nation and brought into question women\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n

The vigil for Sarah Everard is potentially set to be in <\/strong>collaboration with Solace Women\u2019s Aid<\/a>, a leading London charity which provide extended support to victims of domestic abuse and violence in multifaceted ways.<\/p>\n

In a statement to the South West Londoner, Nahar Choudhury, chief executive of Solace, said: \u201cFive years on from Sarah Everard\u2019s murder, women do not feel safer.<\/p>\n

\u201cSarah\u2019s death was an unspeakable tragedy, but the resulting outpouring of grief and rage, alongside Met police rhetoric around new, robust measures to support women\u2019s safety, gave us hope. <\/p>\n

\u201cFinally, it seemed, people were listening and lasting change was here.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Met police \u2013 as headlines prove \u2013 have not sufficiently changed. Statistics around the number of women killed by men in England and Wales remain stable. <\/p>\n

\u201cAs London\u2019s largest domestic abuse and sexual violence charity, we work with women, every day, living in fear. <\/p>\n

\u201cMisogyny must be addressed, at its root, with those in power \u2013 such as police officers \u2013 thoroughly vetted before being placed in positions of responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kaiser made it clear the vigil would be a strictly non-political event, ahead of the upcoming local elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt felt right to do it as a non-political event.\u201d he said, highlighting the need for women \u2018to feel safe on the common\u2019.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cPeople will not forget.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scotland Yard previously said, in an article written by the Standard<\/a>: \u201cIt is dedicated to improving its response to violence against women and girls who \u201cdeserve to feel safe going about their daily lives\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n
