\nMichelle Obama says she’s in therapy, and it’s helping her transition to what
\nshe thinks is going to be the next phase of her life.<\/p>\n
\n
\nAccording to a short video clip
\nposted by the Daily Mail US, Michelle said she started the therapy journey
\nafter going through a \u2018hard thing\u2019 in her life.<\/p>\n
\n
\n\u201cAt this phase of my life, I’m in
\ntherapy right now because I’m transitioning, you know? I’m 60 years old,\u201d she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\n
\n\u201cI’ve finished a really hard thing
\nin my life with my family intact, I’m an empty nester, my girls are in\u2014you
\nknow, they’ve been launched.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n
\nMichelle said she’s got ‘other
\nvoices’ to talk to and a ‘new person that’s getting to know me’ as she works
\nthrough things.<\/p>\n
\n
\n“I now don’t have the excuse
\nof, ‘well, my kids need this,’ or ‘my husband needs that,’ or ‘The country
\nneeds that.'”<\/p>\n
\n
\n\u201cSo, I’m getting that tune-up for
\nthis next phase because I believe this is a whole new phase in life for me. And
\nI now have the wisdom to know\u2014let me go get some coaching while I’m doing it,\u201d
\nshe said.<\/p>\n
\n
\nShe told Daily Mail that
\ntherapy is a ‘tune-up for this next phase’ in an attempt to ‘unwind some old
\nhabits and sort through some old guilt.\u2019<\/p>\n
\n
\nMichelle encouraged anyone who needs
\nmental health services to try and get access to a therapist.<\/p>\n
\n
\n\u201cI am an advocate of it. Everybody
\nneeds to find their form of it, the best way they can,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\n
\nThe Obamas have been married for 32
\nyears but have faced ongoing rumors about their marriage status over the last
\nfew months.<\/p>\n
\n
\nMichelle has been open about her
\nmarriage struggles throughout the years, particularly on her new podcast, IMO
\n(In My Opinion), which she hosts with her brother, Robinson.<\/p>\n
\n
\nEarlier in the year, Michelle spoke
\nout against rumours that her marriage to Barack Obama might be in trouble.<\/p>\n
\n
\nThe former First Lady did not
\naccompany her husband to several high-profile events\u2014including Donald Trump’s
\ninauguration and the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter\u2014fueling
\nspeculation that they might be separating.<\/p>\n
\n
\nWithout explicitly mentioning these
\noccasions, Michelle told the Work in Progress podcast hosted by actress
\nSophia Bush that she was now in a position to control her own calendar as a
\n“grown woman.”<\/p>\n
\n
\nShe said that people were not able
\nto believe that she was “making a decision” for herself and instead
\n“had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.”<\/p>\n
\n
\nMichelle shared that she felt some
\nguilt for stepping back from certain duties.<\/p>\n
\n
\n“That’s the thing that we, as
\nwomen, I think we struggle with\u2014like disappointing people,” she said.<\/p>\n
\n
\n“I mean, so much so that this
\nyear people couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself, that
\nthey had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.<\/p>\n
\n
\n“This couldn’t be a grown woman
\njust making a set of decisions for herself, right? But that’s what society does
\nto us.”<\/p>\n
