{"id":790552,"date":"2026-02-26T15:49:20","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T15:49:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/790552\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T15:49:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T15:49:20","slug":"schemes-using-new-and-emerging-materials-among-riba-south-east-award-finalists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/790552\/","title":{"rendered":"Schemes using \u2018new and emerging\u2019 materials among RIBA South East award finalists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year\u2019s finalists include half a dozen homes, including the self-build Clay Rise house in East Grinstead by Templeton Ford, which was a finalist for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/takero-shimazakis-niwa-house-wins-manser-medal-aj-house-of-the-year-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2025 Manser Medal<\/a>, as well as R H Partnership\u2019s revamp of Saltdean\u2019s Grade II*-listed lido and Felix Lewis Architects\u2019 conversion of an Egyptian Revival-style boiler house into a headquarters for a hi-fi company.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/riba-reveals-14-strong-shortlist-for-south-east-regional-awards\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In 2025<\/a> the RIBA also shortlisted 14 projects for regional recognition in the South East, eight of which went on to win honours.<\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s RIBA South East Building of the Year award was handed to the \u2018exquisitely restored\u2019 Sheerness Dockyard Church by Hugh Broughton Architects. The scheme subsequently received a national award.<\/p>\n<p>The region also produced one of the six projects shortlisted for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/stirling-prize-2025-which-scheme-do-aj-readers-want-to-win\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2025 Stirling Prize<\/a> \u2013 namely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riba.org\/explore\/awards\/uk-awards\/regional-awards\/2025\/south-east-award-winners\/hastings-house\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hugh Strange Architects\u2019 Hasting House<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>RIBA South East jury chair Craig Sheach, partner at PRP, said: \u2018The jury are delighted to have shortlisted an incredibly diverse range of schemes, from bespoke new-build homes and deftly re-imagined heritage buildings to bold and beautifully crafted civic interventions.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018These projects show how the boundaries of architecture can be pushed in new and different directions, exploring ways to understand and improve social interaction as well as challenging preconceived notions of spatial organisation.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-817744\" class=\"size-full wp-image-817744\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/High-House_Ivan-Jones_Press_03-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1750\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-817744\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">High House Plumpton, East Sussex by BakerBrown Studio<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u2018They exploit new and emerging materials or deepen our understanding of how to bring existing structures back to life. Irrespective of the building type or brief, they all take the hard path, exploring the road less travelled in the search of craft, quality and human interaction.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We are excited about this shortlist, which truly highlights the strength and depth of design within the South East region.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>All projects shortlisted for RIBA Awards are visited by a regional jury and the winning projects will be announced later this spring.<\/p>\n<p>The winners will then be considered for several RIBA South East Special Awards, including the RIBA South East Sustainability Award and RIBA South East Building of the Year, before being considered for a\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/links.uk.defend.egress.com\/Warning?crId=699f0eb27f617e68048fcaba&amp;Domain=emap.com&amp;Threat=eNpzrShJLcpLzAEADmkDRA%3D%3D&amp;Lang=en&amp;Base64Url=eNo1x7ENwCAMBMCJwvfZ5lEQQSCMjCMzPk3o7l6zMW_A3YOWyCCakdZoogl06jPx1etXpxXpbOcb4IsXcw%3D%3D&amp;@OriginalLink=www.riba.org\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RIBA National Award<\/a>, which will be announced in summer.<\/p>\n<p>The shortlist for the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/links.uk.defend.egress.com\/Warning?crId=699f0eb27f617e68048fcaba&amp;Domain=emap.com&amp;Threat=eNpzrShJLcpLzAEADmkDRA%3D%3D&amp;Lang=en&amp;Base64Url=eNotxkEKgDAMBMAXtXv3NxFLDZY2bCIRX-_FOc0ZYb4BmVmpu9TFjvbYWGyQFB6O-yr_PJRDZy9GfRs-ynsXMQ%3D%3D&amp;@OriginalLink=www.riba.org\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RIBA Stirling Prize<\/a>\u202f\u2013 the UK\u2019s best new building \u2013 will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects and announced in September.
