An investigation has been launched after the body of a woman was found near a former south Manchester cricket club yesterday (May 5).<\/p>\n

Police were called to Brookthorpe Avenue, Burnage, at around 3pm on Monday following reports of a body found nearby. The piece of land behind the street – formerly the site of Burnage Cricket Club – remained cordoned off today (May 6) as officers carried out enquiries.<\/p>\n

GMP has indicated that they are not able to confirm at this stage if the death is being treated as suspicious.<\/p>\n

Sana Anwer, 35, said she first noticed police cars arrive on Brookthorpe Avenue at around 2:30pm. “There were quite a few police coming and going: two vans, a couple of cars and a tactical aid unit,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Then I went on an evening walk at around half six and we saw that the whole cricket ground was taped and blocked off – so ten we knew it was a bit more serious.”<\/p>\n

Ms Anwer recalled seeing forensics officers in white suits going back and forth to the field through the back garden of a property, and working inside a blue tent erected on the edge of the field.<\/p>\n

Another neighbour on Burnside Drive whose back garden looks onto the site said he saw police officers searching in the grass.<\/p>\n

The force have now confirmed the body of a woman, who has yet to be identified, was found. In a statement, police said: “We are investigating after the body of a woman was found near Brookthorpe Avenue, Burnage, at around 3pm on Monday 5 May.<\/p>\n

“Officers are working to identify the woman and a Home Office post-mortem has been authorised. Anyone with information should call us, quoting log 1867 of 5\/5\/25.”<\/p>\n
